William Shand Caie, born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 11, 1948, was the son of the late Agnes "Betty" Caie (Reuben “Duz” Kananen) and James Caie Sr. (Bonnie Caie). On August 17, 2019, at the young age of 71, Bill lost his nine-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Brandon (Jeremy); Kristen Terry (Mike); and Lisa Caie; as well as his ex-wife, Carol Caie; and his five grandchildren: Haley Klann, Jocelyn Klann, Ryker Klann, Ellison Brandon, and Lily Terry. He is also survived by his siblings James Caie Jr. (Carol), Patrica Bradford (Jim), and Janice Caie-Lawrence (John), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Growing up in Farmington, Michigan, Bill had a busy life. During those early years, he was an altar boy, a Boy Scout, and played Little League baseball. He always loved music and enjoyed playing the trumpet in the school bands and the guitar in a rock-and-roll band (The Barons of Sound) he started with his brother and some friends. Bill graduated from North Farmington High School in 1966, and then went on to attend Michigan State University.
After college Bill began employment with Ford Motor Company where he worked for a few years before starting his own landscaping and snow removal company. He loved this business and worked hard, alongside his partner, for many years. Always a hard worker, he returned to Ford Motor Company, retiring in 2005.
Bill had a number of memorable qualities. He possessed a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He was resourceful, creative, and artistic, being known as a “jack of all trades” with his ability to fix just about anything. He loved animals, Detroit sports, music, and classic sport cars. Other favorites were his Irish-Scottish heritage, chocolate, and his HD TV. Most of all, he adored his family. He felt that being a father, and a papa, were his greatest accomplishments in life.
In one final selfless act, Bill donated his body to science, assisting students beginning their medical career at Michigan State University. Eventually, Bill will be laid to rest alongside his mother and step-father at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
To all of those who knew Bill Caie, he will be greatly missed.
In lieu of a funeral celebration and flowers, the family humbly requests that any donations in his memory be made to the Michigan Humane Society.
