Obituary for Tanya Maria Bartlett

Tanya Maria Bartlett died in the early morning of September 6, 2022, in Brighton, Michigan, the result of a slowly developing illness called progressive supranuclear palsy. She was 79 years old.

Tanya was born Tatiana Maria Iwankiw on July 15, 1943, in Stryy, Ukraine to Walter and Natalia (Mykytka) Iwankiw. Due to the war and the advancing and retreating forces of Germany and Russia, her parents took Tanya and her brother, Michael, on a “vacation”. They ended up in Berchtesgaden at the end of the conflict. The Russians now controlled all of Ukraine. So, rather than return home to Stryy, her parents decided to emigrate to the “Golden Land”, the United States of America. It took some time and effort, but they ended up in Delaware in 1950. Their relatives also emigrated and most of them settled in Ontario, Canada.

Tanya’s father was a large animal veterinarian and her mother had been a teacher. Initially, life was difficult for them, but eventually her father was able to become a U. S. Government meat inspector and the family moved to California. There, Tanya and her older brother were able to continue their schooling and help their parents become more fluent in speaking English.

After high school, Tanya became a claims adjuster at Blue Cross Blue Shield and at the age of 21 she was naturalized. At a cocktail party when she was of 22, Tanya met the love of her life James Oswald Bartlett. In November 1966 they were married in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Los Angeles. Her husband was an engineer employed in the aerospace industry. Eventually, constantly changing government contracts necessitated her family’s move to Illinois in 1971. At the end of 1973, her husband changed to a consumer-based industry, automobiles. She and her family moved to Michigan. By this time Tanya had three children: Gregory Michael (born in 1968 in Orange County, California), Roxanne Monica (born in 1971 in Orange County), and Julianne Marie (born in 1972 in Madison County, Illinois). She was a vigilant and busy housewife, while also caring for a multitude of animals: dogs, cockatiels, fish, snakes, lizards, hermit crabs, chickens, finches, parakeets, canaries, and rabbits.

Eventually, her family settled into Livingston County, Michigan and, as her children grew older, she returned to work. First, she was in retail sales then she was a receptionist in a physician’s office, retiring in 2005. Then she had more time for her interests. Specifically, gardening, growing orchids, and nature walks. She could identify almost all plants, trees, and flowers. She was an avid movie goer and enjoyed going to the shows with family and friends. She also liked to stay current on world and local news and she was not afraid to be opinionated. Her number one priority was her family and trying to make time for her children and grandchildren. On holidays, she could put Martha Stewart to shame with her appetizer spreads, entrees, and desserts. Jim and Tanya were married for 56 years, and she lived a full and happy life.

Daughter of the late Walter and Natalia Iwankiw, Tanya is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Bartlett; children, Gregory Bartlett, Roxanne Newsom, and Julianne (Paul) Camilleri; grandchildren, Corinne and Devon (Genevieve Cornwall) Newsom, Gina, Sophia, and Anna Camilleri; brother, Michael (Nusia) Iwankiw; also many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
