Obituary for Steven Matthew Bown

Steven Matthew Bown, a resident of Commerce Twp. and formerly of Howell, passed away March 2, 2012. He was 51 years old.

Steve was born on January 18, 1961 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the youngest of three sons born to parents Robert Carl and Patricia (nee. Morton) Bown. The family resided in Detroit until Steve was in middle school, then moved to Northville. Steve graduated from Northville High School in 1979. He was considered an "auto rat" throughout his high school years where he developed his passion for automobiles and engines.

Following high school graduation, Steve began working as a mechanic. He decided to continue his education at Western Michigan University, where also met his future wife, Cindy. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in GeoPhysics. Following graduation, they moved to Oklahoma where he worked for Schlumberger. Shortly after his brother's death in 1986, they moved back to the Detroit area.

In August of 1986, Steve married Cindy Vlasity in Kalamazoo. They originally resided in South Lyon, where Steve built their first house. He then pursued his interest in the automotive industry by taking an engineering position at Peterson, a spring company in Southfield. Steve and Cindy had 2 children together; Jennifer in 1988 and Craig in 1989. In 1993, the family moved to Howell, where Steve built their second house on 20 acres. There, he lead a busy life with his children by coaching them in sports and helping them with school.

In 1996, Steve started Performance Springs, Inc with Larry Luchi and Tim Richardson. The firm specialized in designing and producing valve springs for racing. His spring design helped revolutionize automobile racing into what it is today. Over 16 years, the company grew to be a well-respected establishment within the NASCAR, NHRA and IRL circuits.

Steve led a very active life. He built several houses, including a cabin in northern Michigan with his son. On weekends, he enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, jet skiing, and four wheeling. In 2007, he obtained his pilot's license. He loved flying and took pride in it.

In 2009, Steve and Cindy divorced. Shortly after he moved to Commerce Township, where he lived with his companion, Karyn. They enjoyed flying around the eastern U.S, particularly Florida, and spending time on the lake.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Robert Bown, brother Mark Bown and companion Karyn Martin.

In addition to his loving mother Pat Bown, Steve is survived by his children Jennifer and Craig Bown and their mother Cindy; brother Michael (Pam) Bown; nephew Kevin and niece Alison. Extended family and dear friends join in mourning Steve's passing and give thanks for his life among them.
