Stephen K. Benedict passed away in the care of his loving family Tuesday, December 25, 2012.
Stephen Benedict grew up in the San Jose area. He had fond memories of the area as it was during his childhood: rural open spaces, oak trees, and walnut and fruit orchards. He especially liked reminiscing about the family ranch, where he and his relatives would go for vacations.
Steve worked his way through college and graduate school at San Jose State University, earning a Bachelors degree in Biology and a Masters degree in Toxicology. His first jobs were industrial hygiene positions at pharmaceutical companies in the Bay Area. Later, he moved to Seattle, to manage the environmental health and safety program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In Seattle, he met his wife Kim. They married and had their first child, Katie. While in Seattle, Steve also earned a Masters degree in Business from the University of Washington.
Steves next job was as director of health and safety at the University of California, San Diego. The familys second and third children, Malcolm and Jerry, were born in the San Diego area. The family moved to Michigan in 2010 when Steve accepted a directors position at the University of Michigan. What Steve valued most about his career was the opportunity to help others live safe and healthy lives.
Steve was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his family: favorite activities that he did with the children included model trains, model rockets, skiing, and reading classic books outloud. He also enjoyed doing woodworking, landscaping, and home improvement projects. He could tackle any project, large or small, and make it turn out right. He appreciated being part of a vibrant church community in each place that the family lived.
His family and friends will always have special memories of his kindness, patience, integrity, determination, and courage.
Stephen is survived by Kimberley his beloved wife of 20 years and their children. He is also survived by his brothers Michael, Tom and Mark, extended family and a host of dear friends.
