Obituary for Sharon Rucker Hudson

Sharon Rucker Hudson, 64, of East Lansing, passed away in the care of her family March 23, 2013.

Sharon Rucker Hudson was born in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1948, the first of seven children born to WWII veteran Claude Lee Rucker, Jr. and his wife Shirley Reed Rucker. The family moved to Amelia Island, Florida in 1949. There Sharon excelled in academics and music, graduating from Fernandina Beach High School in 1966. She left Fernandina to attend the University of Florida to study Nursing and upon graduation in 1970, Sharon was commissioned as an officer in the US Army.

In 1971 she married Robert Milton Hudson, and together they had three children, David, Margaret and Emily. Sharon's assignments as a labor and delivery nurse were some of her most fulfilling and in 1976 she received her MS in Nursing from the University of Kentucky and became a Certified Nurse Midwife. She went on to serve as an Army Nurse Midwife, attending the births of hundreds of babies at Ft. Hood, Texas and Ft. Wainwright, Alaska where she was stationed. She retired from the Army in 1982 and worked at University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida before relocating her family to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where she would ultimately settle and raise her children. Sharon began working at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit in 1985 as the Director of Perinatal Nursing. She also provided prenatal care to high risk women at the Grace Ross Clinic in Detroit.

In 2000 Sharon began working at the Michigan Department of Community Health as the Director of the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and in 2003 moved to her home in East Lansing with Emily. A certified Master Gardener and active member of the Meridian Garden Club, Sharon designed and planted her own beautiful gardens at her house on Kenberry Drive. She was a sports fan, closely following first her children�s teams and later sharing their interest in the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions as well as the Michigan State University women's basketball team. She loved to read and was a lifelong learner. Sharon died at her home on March 23, 2013 surrounded by her family.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father Claude Lee Rucker, Jr.

In addition to her children David E. Hudson, Margaret L. (Ryan Sweeder) Hudson and Emily E. Hudson; Sharon is survived by her mother Shirley R. Rucker; siblings Reed G. (Patricia) Rucker, Melanie S. (Chuck Kelley) Rucker, Claude L. (Jeanne) Rucker, III., Dawn S. (Paul Mango) Rucker, Lorena R. (Bob) Dancho, and Suellen M. (Chromer) Smith, also extended family and friends.

Funeral Service to be held from Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton on Thursday, March 28, 10 AM. The Rev. Tom Hart to officiate. Burial Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Friends may visit Wednesday from 6-9PM.
