Obituary for Sanford 'Walt' Walton Blanton

Sanford Walton Blanton, Jr. (Walt) of Howell, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 25th, 2019. He was 65 years old.

Born on August 26, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the baby of the family to parents, Sanford Walton Blanton, Sr. and Mamie Ophelia (Staples) Blanton. Walt grew up in Birmingham along with his two sisters, Anne (Zeanah) and Linda (Ray). In 1972, Walt enlisted in the Army and was initially stationed in Oahu, Hawaii. He was infantry when he enlisted, served in several positions throughout his career, and became an officer after attending Officer Candidate School. He retired in 2001 as a Major.

Upon his military retirement, he continued to serve the country through civil service with administrative support positions including with Transportation Security Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He retired from civil service in 2015.

In 1974, Walt was assigned to Fort McClellan in Alabama where he met the love of his life, Lenore Mary Anderson. Their courtship grew quickly, and they were wed on August 9, 1975 in Spruce, Michigan. Walt and Lenny have two children, Kimberly (McDade) and Sam. Walt loved his family and his only granddaughter from Kimberly and Mike, Lily (McDade), was the apple of his eye. He adored spending time with Lily, singing her songs and playing games with her.

Walt enjoyed traveling and taking the scenic route. He exemplified living by the road tripper's mantra that states, "It's all about the journey, not the destination”. If one traveled with him, one would find themselves on backroads, seeing oddities and unusual sights that could be found from Roadside America.

Walt was an avid University of Alabama Football fan. He had fond memories of watching games as a young child and enjoyed attending a few games in person. Saturdays in the fall were dedicated to watching the Crimson Tide where he would often yell “Roll Tide Roll” and “Run da bawl, Bama!”.

Walt appreciated history and was dedicated to uncovering the past. He spent hours in libraries and online researching ancestry for anyone who expressed an interest in learning about their genealogy. He surfaced little known family secrets, debunked family stories when he found concrete documentation, and ensured that the knowledge was given to family members. He even appeared in two episodes of the Dead Files as a genealogy expert.

What Walt will be remembered for most is his generosity. He went above and beyond to help those in need. From dropping everything he was doing to assist his daughter when she locked her keys in her car, to driving through the night to be with his family when his sister passed away; his loving kindness and thoughtfulness was felt by all who knew him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Lenore Blanton (nee. Anderson); children, Kimberly (Mike) McDade and son, Sam Blanton; granddaughter, Lily McDade; nieces, Wendy (Pat) Stephens and Debbie Stephenson; nephew, Brent (Valleri) Zeanah; four great nieces and three great nephews; mother-in-law, Nona Trigger; sisters-in-law, Chris (Al) Vadnais and Kathy (Kim) Leaym; two nieces-in-law, one great niece and one great nephew as well as many dear friends and extended family members.

Sanford was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Mamie Blanton and sisters, Anne Zeanah and Linda Ray.
