Mr. Russell G. Stults of Marion Township died Friday, November 6, 2009 in the care of his family at the University of Michigan Hospital after a brave and long battle with cancer. He was 62 years old.
Born September 14th, 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan, Russell was one of three children born to parents Russell Sanders and Nettie Elizabeth (nee. Kusik) Stults.
Russell loved to listen to Mozart's horn concertos. The horn concertos reminded Russell of the time he spent in the Michigan State Marching Band playing trombone. While at Michigan State, Russell was also in the ROTC, and made the Dean's List in his Junior and Senior years. In 1970, Russell earned his Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering. He remained an avid fan of Michigan State University athletics, and rarely missed watching a football, basketball, or hockey game.
Although he was quite dedicated to all aspects of his civil engineering work, Russell most enjoyed his career as a consulting engineer. Russell was also very proud to be in the Army Reserve for 25 years and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1996. He was a member of Covenant Orthodox Presybterian Church in Brighton, and had served as an elder, deacon, and Sunday School teacher in prior churches. Russell was also a former school board member of Contra Costa Christian Schools in Walnut Creek, California. Russell met Marie Sonnega in December 1967 and they married on September 6, 1969 in Muskegon. In the years following, the young couple was blessed by the births of their two daughters Anne and Corrie. The family supported Russells career and lived in several locations including Virginia, Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan; Indiana, California; and Ohio. Early this autumn, Russell and Marie shared their 40th wedding anniversary with a celebration put together by their daughters.
Russell was a devoted husband, dedicated father and loving grandfather. He so loved spending time with his grandchildren. Russell will also be deeply missed by his loving canine companions Tyler and Tucker.
Since 2004, Russell has been bravely battling a rare malignant fibrous histiocytoma sarcoma. His family and doctors have continually supported the good fight.
Russell was preceded in death by his sister Carol Ann Stults who was stillborn parents Russell Sanders and Nettie Elizabeth (nee. Kusik) Stults, and brother-in-law Donald Vander Jagt.
Russell is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years Marie Elizabeth Stults; loving daughters Anne (Gordon) Ebright and Corrie (Pastor Christopher) Post; dear grandchildren Tiffanny (Troy) Forgette; Ryan, Andrew & Ami Ebright, Joshua & Samuel Saltzman; Alaina, Caleb, Seth & Jacob Post; brother Donald (Judy) Stults, sisters-in-law Barbara Vander Jagt and Nelly (Orville) Elema as well as many loving extended family members and dear friends.
