Obituary for Robert Henry Luke, Jr.

Robert Henry Luke, Jr., a resident of Brighton, formerly of White Lake and Royal Oak and native of Detroit, passed away on November 5, 2016 at the age of 85.

Bob was born in Detroit, MI on February 25, 1931 to Robert and Louise Luke. He spent his childhood in Detroit where he left school at seventeen and joined the U.S. Army with his mother’s permission. His last station was based in Honolulu, Hawaii where he appeared in the movie From Here to Eternity, and by chance met the love of his life, Beverly Smith, a nurse at Queens Hospital. The couple soon married in June 1952 and their family grew rapidly.

After returning to Michigan, Bob became a Tool and Die Designer by trade and raised his family of four boys and four girls. He spent his career employed by Erie Engineering in Madison Heights, MI until he retired in 1995.

He enjoyed the outdoors, perfecting his landscaping, big game hunting and especially splitting his time between their Michigan and Florida homes with his wife. Bob was a man with a generous heart and kind spirit, and was always there if he was needed. Family holidays were very important to him as he truly treasured his family. Every year his Christmas light displays would grow, and be more creative, and he would search for the perfect tree for hours, but having family around was what he truly enjoyed. He also was an avid sports fan, supporting the Detroit Tigers and Lions, as well as, U of M and MSU football. Although the teams that were true to his heart were his children’s and grandchildren’s. Those were his favorite teams to coach from the bench, sidelines and stands.

He is survived by Beverly, his beloved wife of 65 years, his children: Kathleen (Doug) Allen, Paul (Mary) Luke, Tim (Donna) Luke, Robin Pokoyoway, Robert Luke, Paula (Alan) Biebuyck and Cindy (Doug) Dibble; his 13 Grandchildren, and 9 Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard (Maryanne) Luke, a sister Sandra Redcloud, and a brother Donald Luke.

Extended family and dear friends join Bob’s family in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God of his life among them.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, on Friday, November 11, from 3-8PM. Interment and Military Honors will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, on Saturday, November 12, at 11AM. Memorials may be made in his name to Wounded Warrior Project.
