Rachael Joan (nee. Houck) McCormick, of Brighton, MI, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was 85 years old.
Born in Nappanee, Indiana on May 31, 1926, she was the daughter of J. Lynn and Charlotte (nee. Cool) Houck. Rachael attended Michigan State University and earned a bachelors degree in teaching and was also the president of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Rachael met the love of her life, Norman, at MSU and they became engaged on New Years Eve of 1947. They were married in front of the fireplace at her parents home in Ypsilanti, MI, on August 14, 1948. The couple settled in West Bloomfield where they made their home for 49 years and raised their family. Rachaels career began as a P.E. teacher and then for over 20 years, she taught preschool at Mayfair Co-op Nursery School in Farmington Hills.
Many of the familys fondest memories are from their up north home at Canada Creek Ranch near Atlanta, MI. Rachael and Norman loved to travel with their children and grandchildren taking trips to Disney World and on an Alaskan cruise. She believed that watching the generations of her family grow was lifes most precious gift, and she cherished her long and happy marriage. Rachael was an avid MSU sports fan, loved to do puzzles, read and be with her family. Upon retirement, she studied her familys genealogy and was a member of Special Blend, a local singing group.
She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 62 years, Norman McCormick and is survived by her loving children, Kathleen McCormick Schulz, Michael Scott (Jeanette) McCormick, Cheryl (Jim) McCormick Leach, Patrick Kevin (Sara) McCormick; grandchildren, Ian, Jeremy, Robben, Ann, Michael Jr., Kelly, Andrew, Ryan, Alex, Maggie; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St. in Brighton on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Noon. Friends may gather at 11AM until time of service. Memorials are encouraged to American Cancer Society.
