Obituary for Phyllis I. Laier McKenzie

Phyllis Irene Laier McKenzie, a resident of Tuscon, Arizona and former resident of Howell, Michigan, died on February 27, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. She was 83 years old.

Born on July 13, 1932 in Livingston County, Michigan, the daughter of John Nelson Briggs and Helen Briggs, Phyllis grew up in Livingston County where she was a 1950 graduate of Hartland High School. On November 24, 1951 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fenton she married Alvis Laier, Jr. They made their home in Deerfield Township where they were blessed with the births of seven children. Together they raised the children on the farm where they kept chickens and were active in 4H for many years. She was an active member of St. Augustine Parish, where she was a member of the Altar Society, and at the Deerfield Township Hall where she worked elections for over twenty years. In 1985 she lost her husband Alvis to a massive heart attack.

In 1991 she married her friend Doug McKenzie whom had lost his wife, Rita, Phyllis’ friend from their years together in the American Legion Ladie’s Auxiliary. They made their home in Tuscon, Arizona where Phyllis worked the local elections, as she had in Michigan, and also worked with the Greater Littletown Human Resource Group helping people apply for grants for gas, food and electricity. She was a long time member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed opportunities to travel enjoyed helping to organize and attend the Hartland High School Alumni Banquet.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Alvis Laier, Jr. and Douglas McKenzie, her parents, John Nelson Briggs and Helen Briggs, a brother, John Briggs, grandson, Joseph Trudeau IV, and great grandson, Pierceon Combs.

She is survived by her children, Susan (David) Ray, Alvis Michael (Karen) Laier, Ed (Deb) Laier, Tom (Kim) Laier, Judy (Joseph) Trudeau III, David (Debbie) Laier and Kathy (Tim) Reed; sisters, Dora May (Dr. Richard) Charlick, Charlotte Lemon and Barbara (Greg) Cook; brother, James Briggs. She was blessed with grandchildren, Rebecca (Harold) Fremd, Frieda (Tracy) Ruiz, Charles (Cherie) Ray, Chelsea (Corey) Schmidt, Katie (Jerome) Navock, Kristy (Joel) Neubecker, Alvis Michael (Elizabeth) Laier II, Kelli (Stanley) Malone, Edward Laier, Tonya (Jim) Petrucci, Cherish (Aaron) Frank, Jil (Klayton) Amyx, Sara (Drew) Stenic, Jonathon Laier, Philip (Lisa Drake) Laier, Michelle (Danny Schneider) Laier, Tom (Sarah Stebbins) Laier Jr., Pauline Laier, Eric (Jennifer Tucker) Laier, Joseph (Michelle) Trudeau V, Angela (Michael) Combs, Alicia (Daniel) Lewan, Shane (Jill) Dunn, Lance (Kerri) Dunn, Kami Reed and Tyler Reed; great grandchildren, Tylor, Lane, Carter, Jakob, Alex, Helena, Matthew, Gabrielle, Annabelle, Isabelle, Kaiden, Ashley, Alexa, Tatum, Kirsten, Hailey, Noelle, Alvis Michael III, Stuart, Derek, Bentley, Dominic, Alex, Dillon, Gage, Jade, Klayton, Austin, Kiana, Izaiah, Iliana, Caiden, Jacob, Dean, Eloise, Leon, Louis, Gage, Austin, great great grandson, Hudson, and many extended family members and dear friends who join her family in mourning her passing and givings thanks to God for her life among them.


Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main Street, Brighton, on Friday, March 4, from 2-4PM and 6-9PM, with a Rosary at 7PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, 2099 N. Hacker Rd., Howell, on Saturday, March 5, at 11AM. Burial St. Augustine Cemetery.
