Pauline Delores Grattan, a longtime resident of Brighton, passed away in the loving care of her family on January 1, 2019 at the age of 90.
Born November 22, 1928 in Sayler Park, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH, Pauline was the only child of Beatrice Snell.
As a young girl growing up in Ripley, Ohio, for fun, Pauline would play near the Ohio River bank and cross the frozen river on foot. Her childhood home was engulfed by The Great Ohio Flood of 1937, and she and her grandmother escaped through the attic to the roof where they were rescued. In her teens, Pauline relocated with her father to the Detroit area.
After graduating from Saint Mary of Redford in 1947, Pauline was employed at Michigan Central Station in downtown Detroit and the Mount Carmel Hospital radiology department.
Meeting the love of her life, Larry Grattan, after dating a few years, they married on July 25, 1953 and put down roots in Livonia, MI. While raising six children, their home was busy and the center point of neighborhood activity that included many summer backyard parties, endless ice skating on the homemade ice rink that engulfed the entire yard, hosting “bridge” club, and more.
Pauline was preceded in death by Larry Grattan (d.2003), her beloved husband of 50 years, brother-in-law, Robert Grattan, and sister-in-law, Shirley Westphall.
She is survived by her children, Kevin (Karen) Grattan, Keith Grattan, Chris Grattan, Laurie (Nick) Stockelman, Les (Suzanne) Grattan, and Dan (Laura) Grattan; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandsons; and 1 great-granddaughter on the way. Pauline is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sally Grattan, as well as extended family and friends.
