Paul Chapman, of Grosse Pointe and Plymouth, passed away in the care of his family on December 14, 2015 at the age of 91.
Paul was born in Detroit of Russian/Ukrainian immigrant parents. The people of the Russian Baptist Church, at Carpenter and Mcdougall, first brought the good news of Jesus Christ to his family.
Paul joined the Navy in 1943 and served his country aboard the USS Mississippi. After World War II, he completed his Masters in Education. He married Margaret Marshall in 1950. Together, they spent the next 65 years and raised three children: Donald, David and Robin.
His career consisted of 36 years at Detroit Edison where the majority of his time was spent in management development and power plant management. After leaving Detroit Edison, he worked for Southern California Edison and Biogen. At 65 he retired again and started a new career spanning 23 years, working with his son David at the Mustard Seed on Hoover. He planted and maintained a beautiful rose garden receiving Landscaper of the Year award from the city of Warren. Paul loved to work and was an encouragement to those close to him.
Paul was also an exceptional athlete. He competed in both football and basketball at Wayne State University and Alma College. He won the National Doubles Championship in Handball and made fitness a part of his daily routine. Even in his late 80’s he could still defeat his children and grandchildren in table tennis.
Paul was committed to Jesus, his wife and family. He will deeply missed.
In addition to Margaret Chapman, his beloved wife of 65 years, Paul is survived by his children Donald (Jan) Chapman, David (Maria) Chapman and Robin (James Hay) Chapman; grandchildren, Jacob (Heather), Benjamin (Brittni), Elizabeth (fiancé Edward), David (Sarah), Alexander (Mariam), Sara (Jay), Mac Hay, Alec Hay, Avery Hay, and Ian Hay; great-grandchildren, Eden, Ruby, Azalea, Eda, Elliana, Caleb, Evelina, Amelia, Roman and four on the way.
Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 11 AM. Friends may visit on Thursday from 4 - 8 PM.
