Obituary for Norman F. McCormick

Norman F. McCormick, of Brighton, formerly of West Bloomfield, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.
Born in Detroit on June 26, 1923, he was the son of Roy and Helen (Kinney) McCormick. He graduated from De La Salle High School where he lettered in football and baseball. It was his pitching arm that got him on the Michigan State baseball team, where he was scouted by professional farm teams and the Detroit Tigers. At his brothers suggestion, he looked up Rachael Houck, a fellow student at Michigan State. After a fine courtship, on New Years Eve of 1947, he proposed to her. After graduation, he went to work with Ford Motor and hitch-hiked weekly between Detroit and East Lansing where his fianc was still a student. They were married in front of the fireplace of her parents home in Ypsilanti on August 14, 1948, settled in West Bloomfield where they made their home for 49 years and raised their family. Their up north home at Canada Creek Ranch near Atlanta was the center of many of the familys fondest memories.
After 33 years with Ford Motor, Norman retired in 1980 and worked as a consultant with Hedwin Corporation of West Bloomfield. He enjoyed his partial retirement, as a scratch golfer and fellow traveler as he and Rachael accompanied their children and grandkids on Disney and Alaskan cruises. Watching the generations of his family rise up around him teaching his children and grandchildren to hunt and fish, golf and play sports he regarded as lifes most precious gifts and the result of his long and happy marriage.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Rachael, and by their sons and daughters, Kathleen McCormick Schulz, Michael Scott (Jeanette) McCormick, Cheryl (Jim) McCormick Leach, Patrick Kevin (Sara) McCormick; grandchildren, Ian, Jeremy, Robben, Ann, Michael Jr., Kelly, Andrew, Ryan, Alex, Maggie; six great-grandchildren and a host of friends who join with the family in mourning his death and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
A Tribute To His Life will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 East Main St. in Brighton on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 11AM. Friends may gather beginning at 9:30 AM until the time of service. Memorials are encouraged to American Cancer Society, 2010 Hogback Road, Suite 4, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. For Further information please phone Lynch & Sons, Brighton 810.229.2905
