Obituary for Michael Houran

Michael Edward Houran passed away in the care of his family July 11, 2012. He was 89 years old.

Born April 13, 1923 in Flint, Michigan Michael was the only child born to parents Cornelius A. and Margaret Mary (nee. Culliton) Houran. Michael was raised in Flint where he graduated from St. Michael�s School in 1941. Before enlisting in the Navy Air Corps, Michael began his studies at the University of Detroit in early 1942. By 1944, Michael had received his commission as a Naval Officer (Ensign) and was awarded Gold Wings designating him as a Navy Pilot. Following the conclusion of WWII, Michael separated to inactive Navy Duty and resumed his studies at U of D. As a student, Michael met Margaret �Mickey� Flynn of Marshall, Michigan who at the time of their meeting was a student of Chemistry at Marygrove College. By 1947, Michael had both completed his graduate degree and fallen deeply in love with Mickey. Michael and Mickey were married and blessed by the births of a son and two daughters whom they raised with pride in their Irish heritage in Detroit. In 1998, Michael mourned the passing of his beloved Mickey.

Michael�s career in sales included service to Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, and over 25 years with the Sperry & Hutchinson Company (S&H Green Stamps). He held many positions over the years from Personnel to Management, most notably as President and CEO of Accounts and Incentives.

In his later years, Michael moved to Brighton where he joined St. Patrick Church and became active with the Knights of Columbus in addition to all the activities of the Parish. Recognized for his dedication and kindness, he caught the attention of Ms. Catherine. The two found great comfort and companionship in one another and on April 12, 2003, Michael married Catherine at St. Patrick Church. Michael and Catherine have been married for 9 years.

Michael is preceded in death by Margaret his wife of over 50 years.
In addition to Catherine his wife of 9 years, Mr. Houran is survived by his loving children Timothy (Joan) Houran, Ann (John) Debien, Kathleen (Michael) Jenzen; grandchildren Aimee (Chad) Pifer, Jeffrey (Kerry) Houran, Michaela (Kyle) McGrath, Meghan Jenzen, Sarah Debien, Kristen (Vincent) Jalaba, Stephen Debien, and Timothy Debien; great-grandchildren Jacob Pifer, Alaina Pifer, Carson Houran, Amanda Pifer, Brennan McGrath, Grayson McGrath, Isabella Houran and Amelia Jalaba. Extended family and dear friends join in mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.

Mass of the Resurrection to be held from St. Patrick Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton on Monday at 10:30 AM with gathering beginning one hour prior. Fr. James Mangan to officiate. Burial Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton Sunday from 2 - 9 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials encouraged to: Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Francis de Sales Assoc. or American Cancer Society.
