Obituary for Michael G. Cottrell

Michael G. Cottrell of Brighton, passed away September 2, 2016 peacefully at home with his family at age 61. He had carcinoid cancer (diagnosed in 2003). He was born in Biloxi, Mississippi on December 19, 1954 to Clara (Papineau) and Gerard Cottrell. He grew up in Detroit, MI and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1973. He attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Accounting.

In July of 1981, Michael met the love of his life, Rebecca Bailo. The next year they were married and shortly after, started their family in Royal Oak. In 1984, they bought their first home in Novi where they lived for ten years before moving to Brighton in 1994. They have five beautiful children together: Megan, Shannon, Patrick, Colleen, and Brendan.

In 1978, Michael Cottrell started working at Gordon & Company, an accounting firm, where he became a partner by 1987. Two years later, he became VP of Finance at Lowry Computer Products. In 1998 he started working at Osprey, SA, a real estate management company, where he served as Chief Financial Officer until his last days.

When he was not working, you could often find him on the course at Lakelands Golf & Country Club where he was a member for 26 years. He traveled to some of the most famous golf courses in the world, including Pebble Beach. He also attended the Masters once and the Ryder Cup three times (in Michigan at Oakland Hills, in Kentucky at Valhalla, and in Ireland at The K Club).
He loved sports. Faithful to his alma mater and his hometown, he followed MSU and Detroit sports teams. However, Michael’s favorite team was whatever team his youngest son Brendan was playing hockey for that year. They even traveled to Prague together for a hockey tournament in 2013.

Michael was a loyal, generous, and hardworking man, father, husband, friend, and colleague. He walked his oldest daughter, Megan, down the aisle with pride at her wedding in 2011. When Mike and Becky both turned 60 in 2014, they took a two-week long trip out west, visiting Vancouver, Seattle, Glacier National Park, and the Canadian Rockies. In Michael’s last days he found tremendous joy in being a Grandpa to Patrick’s son, George, who was born October 17, 2015.
Michael is survived by Rebecca B. Cottrell, his beloved wife of 34 years and their children Megan (Jeremy), Shannon, Patrick (Aeryn), Colleen, and Brendan; adored grandson George; parents Jerry and Claire; siblings Susie (Jim) Stoklosa, Jim (Cindy), Tom (Linda), Paul (Janis), Judy (Rich) Perry as well as many dear aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorials are encouraged to St. Joseph Mercy Brighton (formerly known as Woodland Cancer Center). Donations should be directed to "Cancer Care for Disadvantaged Patients" and mailed to St. Joseph-Mercy Health System, PO Box 995, Ann Arbor, MI 48106.
