Obituary for Mavis C. Powell

Mavis C. Powell, a resident of Brighton, and a former long time resident of Midland, died peacefully at her home on October 13, 2012, at the age of 77.

Mavis was born on February 8, 1935, in Kingsford, Michigan, to Donald and Margaret Nelson. She was a graduate of Kingsford High School and continued her studies at Michigan State University where she graduated with a degree in Business Education. It was at Michigan State that she met David Powell. They fell in love and married in Kingsford on June 29, 1957. They made their home in Kalamazoo, where Mavis taught briefly, before moving to Midland in 1960. They were blessed with the births of six children, and even as she raised her family, she found time to teach at Regina High School in Midland. She was ever the champion of the underdog, and felt that education should be a leveling ground for all. She felt that everyone should enjoy the same opportunities in life; that no one should be judged, and all people are equal. A scholarship in her parents name continues to carry the legacy of helping students in need.

Mavis and her husband were long time members of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Midland and joined St. Patrick Parish a year-and-a-half ago when they moved to Brighton to be nearer to family. She treasured her lucky 13 grandchildren. Erin, John, Kelsey, Matthew, Meghan, Emily, Shannon, Christopher, Kevin, Rachel, Sean, Moya, and Emma were all Grandmas Sweethearts. Mavis loved filling her time with family, good crossword puzzles, and Michigan State football and basketball. She and her husband would actually adjust their schedules to accommodate Michigan State games.

In addition to David M. Powell, her beloved husband of fifty-five years, she is survived by children, David A. (Tommye) Powell of TX, Pamela (Charles) Reidy of IN, Patricia (Anthony) Consolo of GA, Peggy (Randy) Liepa of Livonia, Mark Powell of CA, and Penny (Jack) Slayton of Brighton and her grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Alice (the late Willard) Brown, Merlin (Shirley) Nelson, Carol (Leo) Trautner, Norma Scolatti, Allen (Mary) Nelson, Patricia (Dein) Nolf, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who join her family in mourning her passing and giving thanks to God for her life among them. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Katherine (George) Gulash and brothers, Irving (Jane) Nelson and Donald (Donna) Nelson.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton, on Wednesday, October 17, at 11:30AM. Entombment in Calvary Cemetery in Midland, Michigan on Thursday, October 18, at 12 Noon. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, on Tuesday, October 16, 3-9PM, with a Rosary in the evening. Memorials may be made in her name to The Donald E. Nelson & Margaret L. Nelson Scholarship Fund, W9473 H. Lucas Drive, Iron Mountain, MI 49801-9409. For further information please phone 810-229-2905.
