Mary K. Shannon July 13, 1924 Feb. 15, 2014
Mary Katherine Halloran Shannon, (aka Irish), aged 89, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on February 15, 2014.
Born July 13, 1924, in Durand, Michigan, to Anna (Miner) and John Halloran, Mary dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a graduate of Mercy School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and Leila Post Hospital in Battle Creek.
She married Paul J. Shannon in South Bend, Indiana on July 4, 1947 and together they raised five children. Paul preceded her in death on August 12, 1989.
Quick with a joke or a story, but even quicker to come to the aid of a forlorn child, a neighbor in trouble or just someone in need, Mary could always be counted on to be present when some disaster happened. She was secretly known as the Phantom Leprechaun for St. Patricks Day Shenanigans involving Fenton Police cars. When she wasnt busy with shenanigans she was helping train the Fenton Police and Fire Departments in Advanced First aid and CPR, which led to the saving of several lives. Her career in nursing spanned many years in emergency services, hospitals and assisted living. She helped develop emergency protocols for Emergency Transport Services in Genesee County including many years as a Red Cross volunteer instructor. She pioneered the medical stations at the Buick Open, as well as at the Bobby Crim Race in Flint. Mary was administrator of the Hilltop Convalescent Center in the Baptist Seminary building until its closing. She then opened the Fenton Extended Care on Beech Street, operating the facility before assuming Director of Nursing responsibilities at Crestmont Medical Center. She also taught EMT Basic courses at Mott Community College.
Mary was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Fenton. A memorial service in her honor will be held March 17. 2014 at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. David Harvey officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at a later date.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Anne Halloran, husband Paul, son Bernard, brother Thomas and sister Loretta, and in- laws; Bernard J. and Winifred Shannon.
She is survived by her children, Patrick J. Shannon, Theresa K. (Jeff) Sirrine, P. Daniel (Beth) Shannon, Thomas R. Shannon, and 11 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
