Marvilyn R. (Powell) Whitney was surrounded by her loving and blessedly loved family as she went to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. The daughter of Marvin L. Powell, Sergeant, U.S. Army Air Corps and Mary E. New, was born in Evansville, Indiana on October 13, 1944.
On July 28, 1962, she married the love of her life, Dennis K. Whitney of Mio, Michigan in San Diego, California where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy.
The young couple was blessed with three children, Michelle Renee (Glenn) Miller, Gordon Dennis and Elizabeth Irene (Michael) Taylor. She was the beloved Nana to eight grandchildren: Melissa, Daniel and Sarah Hyer; Kevin and Justin Whitney; Noah, Joseph and Brennan Taylor and great grandmother to Taylor Whitney.
Marvilyn received an Associate's degree as an Accredited Medical Records Specialist in 1975 and spent her entire professional career in the health management field. She retired in 1993 due to complications with her health.
On October 26, 1995 Marvilyn received a gift of life at the University of Michigan Hospital. She was forever grateful to the Lord and the family who made the decision to donate their loved ones' organs to allow others to continue life. This selfless act would give Marvilyn 18 more years on this earth to make unforgettable memories with her family and friends.
Always a lady, Marvilyn had a gentle grace and poise. Her love of fun and the ability to find humor in any situation made life with her an unending adventure. Her greatest joy and passion was her family with whom she enjoyed Disney vacations, family events, and simply spending time together. Marvilyn loved reading, southern cooking, family genealogy, decorating her home and music.
Marvilyn lived in Brighton with her husband Dennis, for more than 30 years where she was able to enjoy the peaceful tranquility of nature, nurturing her beloved flower gardens and hosting festive celebrations in the backyard gazebo.
A celebration of Marvilyn's life will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2014, as spring was her favorite time of year. Hummingbird Garden Dedication in memory of Marvilyn will take place at Brighton District Library gardens at 11 AM. A time of sharing for refreshments and memories will follow inside the library immediately following.
