Dr. Marilyn S. Jones, founding Artistic Director of the Livingston County Chorale and long time resident of Brighton, died peacefully at her home on July 18, 2014 at the age of 80.
Dr. Marilyn S. Jones, founding Artistic Director of the Livingston County Chorale, graduated from Wayne State University, and earned a Bachelors Degree in Music
Education with a double major in vocal and instrumental music. While still in college, she began working as a church musician, being named Director of Childrens Choirs at the Church of the Master-Presbyterian on Detroits west side. She was granted a Master of Arts in Humanities in 1969 and earned a Ph.D. in Music: Music Education in 1979 from the University of Michigan.
She played flute and piccolo in orchestras at the Fisher Theater, Ford Auditorium, and Masonic Temple organizations, including the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, New York City Opera, and the Plymouth and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. Dr. Jones has received numerous honors including being named Educator Emeritus in 1997 by the Michigan School of Vocal Music Association, and the prestigious Maynard Klein Award in recognition of artistic excellence and a lifetime of leadership in the field of choral music.
In June of 2006, Marilyn was greatly honored by her former students and friends in a two-day celebration reunion. Many came from near and far to pay tribute to Mrs. Jones. There was a musical program in which former Detroit Cass Tech and Renaissance High School students performed and conducted; a memory book was prepared and given to the guest of honor, and tributes and plaques were presented from the Detroit Federation of Musicians, the City of Detroit, the State of Michigan, and the office of Senator Carl Levin. A video tribute from four of her outstanding jazz students was shown to the assembled guests. The event was capped off by the entire banquet audience singing under Dr. Jones direction A Rose Touched by the Suns Warm Rays with many members of The Livingston County Chorale joining voices with others who represented all choral groups Marilyn had conducted over the years.
After retiring from over thirty years of music teaching, both in public schools and colleges, founding and guiding the Livingston County Chorale to greater growth, excellence and recognition has been a source of great pleasure and a continuing challenge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Jones in 1994 and a brother, Marvin (Ruth) Schlicher in 2005. She is survived by her brother, Myles Schlicher, nephews, Clayton, Guy and Karl Schlicher and many dear friends that included many former music students.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, September 28, at 1:30PM.
