Marie Malkowski passed away peacefully on September 22, 2011 at her home in Novi, Michigan. She was 91 years old.
Born in Posen, Michigan on December 18, 1919, she was one of five girls and two boys born to Katherine and Stanley Oleniacz. The family later moved to Caro, Michigan. As a young woman, she worked in the bean factory in Caro. Later, she worked in the local diner where the future love of her life, Anthony Malkowski II, would sip coffee with her boss and wait for her to get off work. An entry in her autograph book reads: Exciting Day - January 22, 1939 - engaged to Mr. Anthony Malkowski. They were married on June 1, 1940. They first lived in Caro, later moving to Detroit where they raised three children, Anthony III, Margaret, and Robert. In their senior years, they lived in Madison Heights, Michigan until Tony passed away in 2001. Marie bravely faced open heart surgery in January of 2002 and later moved on to independent senior living at Fox Run Village in Novi, Michigan.
She enjoyed a meaningful life. She nurtured and watched over her children and grandchildren, bragging about them quite nearly to the day of her death. She loved them all, even when circumstances would have tested that love. She laughed until she died. She embarked on a new life after her husband passed, surprising her children with an announcement that she was starting an exercise program in the swimming pool and taking up line dancing, even appearing in one group dance performance. We watched her, once again, reinvent her life, making the best of things, working with staff, doing her best in physical therapy, and always grateful for the support and help that surrounded her. She demonstrated warmth and appreciation for all the staff at Fox Run and Renaissance Gardens, on occasion ringing for them in the middle of the night to say I forgot to hug you and say thank you today. They loved and enjoyed her as well, and often commented on her kind spirit and good humor.
She is survived by her children, Anthony (Sue) Malkowski III, Margaret (Don Sapikowski) Gammon and Robert (Karin) Malkowski; grandchildren Karen (Peter) Youngson, Meredith, Eric and Leanna; great-grandson, Alexander.
Marie was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a role model, a loving, caring woman. May we live up to her example.
