Marian E. Sutton, a resident of Brighton, formerly of Lake Chemung in Howell, passed away peacefully at Caretel Inns of Brighton on Thursday, September 29, 2011. She was 98 years old.
Born in Williamston, Michigan on August 7, 1913, the daughter of Philip & Clara (nee Hayter) Cheney, Marian Cheney grew up in Dimondale, Michigan and, like many from her generation, left school to begin full-time work to support the household. She later married Harold J. Sutton and made her longtime home on Chemung Lake in the Howell area. Harold & Marian were blessed with the births of two daughters, Delores and Marlene. In the 1960s Marian opened The Gift Shop where she turned her talent for finding antiques and other treasures into a quaint storefront and business she greatly enjoyed operating. Mr. & Mrs. Sutton loved traveling together in their mobile home, often stopping to search for antiques along their roadtrips-including trips to Florida for the Winter where they enjoyed friendships and many fond memories. In 1991, Marian lost her beloved husband Harold. Through the years she has enjoyed crocheting and knitting and seeing the generations of her family grow with grand and great grandchildren. Most recently, she discovered friendships and a sense of community at Caretel Inns of Brighton. In August of this year, on her 98th birthday, Marian was delighted by the visit of her daughters who brought her back to the family house on Chemung Lake to mark the special day. Upon arriving, Marian said in her unmistakably sweet voice, Now Im home.
In addition to her beloved husband, Harold J., Marian was preceded in death by her two sisters.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Delores (the late Robert) Eberth, Marlene (the late Douglas) Thompson; grandchildren, Teri (Peter) Holtslander, Keily (William) Nemith; great grandchildren, Tanner Nemith, Kailey and Harrison Holtslander. Also survived by her nieces, nephews and dear friends.
