Obituary for Marian E. Burchfield

Marian Esther Burchfield passed away at 92 years of age in Brighton, Michigan, on Sunday morning, July 7, 2013. She was surrounded by her family in her final hours, as the loving care of her family was her lifelong passion. She is survived by her three adult children: Kenneth E. Burchfield, 65, of Brighton; James A. Burchfield, 61, of Missoula, Montana; and Gayle A.Burchfield, 58, of Ellensburg, Washington. Kenneth Burchfield is married to Keven Burchfield, and they have two children, Andy and Emily. Andy and his wife, Marcie Burchfield, graced Marian with three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Charlie, and Maggie. James Burchfield is married to Melissa MacKenzie, with a son, Alexander. James also has a daughter, Erin, from his first marriage to Judith Foley. Gayle Burchfield is married to Tom Crawford with a daughter, Katherine.

Marian was born at her home on November 28, 1920, in Steubenville, Ohio. She graduated from Steubenville High School in 1938, and it was there she met her husband of 55 years, William M. Burchfield, also of Steubenville, who preceded her in death on December 23, 2001. Always a good student and a lover of poetry, Marian pursued a career as a librarian after raising her three children, working at the Kinawa Middle School Library for 20 years where she and William lived in Okemos, Michigan. William and Marian had moved to Michigan in 1952 from Columbus, Ohio, where he had attended The Ohio State University. They lived in Ann Arbor from 1952-1958, Adrian, Michigan from 1958-1969, and in Okemos until November 2012 before relocating to Brighton to be with her oldest son and his wife.

Marian was an accomplished artist, starting with oil paintings in the 1960s and expanding to watercolors and Chinese brush painting. Her love for her family inspired her to make original, hand painted cards, mainly of nature scenes, for her every notable occasion in the lives of her family. She had an advanced level of sensitivity toward others, especially children, making her house a popular stop for a broad network of her neighbors and friends to visit Mrs. B. She frequently volunteered for school-based and community activities wherever she lived, and in later years provided art lessons for residents of the Ingham County Extended Care facility in Okemos.

Marian instilled in everyone she met a sense of optimism, purpose, and awe. She loved deeply and openly with a compassion that spread light across the world.

Burial and Committal Services will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan, on Wednesday, July 10, at 10:30AM.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Presbyterian Church of Okemos, on Wednesday, July 10, at 2PM.
