Magdalena "Maggie" Messmann passed away peacefully with family at her side at the age of 100 on September 12, 2019. She was born on August 14, 1919, the only child of Johann and Anna Augustin in Austria-Hungary. She married her love Adam Messmann in 1940 and they spent many happy years together.
Magdalena was incarcerated in a prison camp in Yugoslavia from 1945 to 1947 before escaping the Communist regime into Austria with her husband, daughter and parents. In 1950 she emigrated to Michigan with her daughter and her parents. Her husband Adam joined them in 1951 and they welcomed a son, Richard, in 1956. She became a proud U.S. citizen in 1955 and considered herself blessed for the acceptance and freedoms she found in her adopted country. The family moved to Harper Woods in 1959. Following her husband’s death she moved to Brighton in 1992.
Madgalena loved and enjoyed her family immensely and continued to nurture and support them throughout her life. She made friends easily and enjoyed being involved in her family’s and friend’s activities. She was an active member of the Carpathia Club and the St. Patrick Church (Brighton) Council of Catholic Women. Magdalena was happy to have her family close and looked forward to the many visits she received from her friends and neighbors.
Throughout her life, Magdalena believed that God was watching over her and she gave Him credit for giving her the strength to weather the many hardships she experienced. Her faith never wavered and the light she brought into the world will live with us always.
Magdelena is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and John Kirsch and son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Robin Messmann; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Adam and infant daughter Anna Ingrid.
