Obituary for Leon A. Pastalan, Ph.D.

Leon A. Pastalan, Ph.D., a resident of Hamburg Twp., Michigan, passed away in the loving care of his family on May 8, 2018 at the age of 88.

Leon Anthony Pastalan was born February 7, 1930 in Newark Valley, New York to John and Mary (Rosowska) Pastalan. He was raised on the family dairy farm and graduated from Newark Valley High School in 1948. He graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1953 and thereafter served in the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the Army, he earned his doctorate degree from Syracuse University on 1961. He married Alice Sawyer in 1959. Dr. Pastalan had a long and distinguished career as a professor, which took him to teaching positions at the University of Northern Colorado, Hartwick College, the University of Toledo, and, finally, the University of Michigan from 1966 until his retirement in 1998. During his tenure at the University of Michigan, he was a Professor of Architecture, a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Gerontology, Chairman of the Doctor of Architecture Program and Director of the National Center on Housing and Living Arrangements for the Elderly. After his retirement, he continued to serve as Professor Emeritus. He spent his leisure time as a “gentleman farmer” tending his property on the Huron River in Dexter, Michigan and later at Gill Lake in Hamburg Township, Michigan.

Dr. Pastalan is survived by his wife, Alice, his daughters, Manya (Joseph) Grant and Rebecca (Glenn Arens); his grandchildren, Kelsey Andrews, Megan Andrews, Katherine Andrews, Julia Grant and Nicholas Grant; his sister, Helen Romanowski; sister-in-law, Cassie Pastalan; nieces, Maria Schimer, Elaina (Larry) Scheiman; nephews, John Pastalan, Greg (Sheryl) Pastalan; grand-niece, Kayla Pastalan; grand-nephew, Joseph Pastalan; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ted Pastalan and nephew, Edward Romanowski.

A private memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Dr. Pastalan’s name to the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning’s Enrichment Fund, with checks payable to “University of Michigan” and mail to Taubman College Development and Advancement, 2000 Bonisteel Boulevard Room 2150, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2069.
