Obituary for Kenneth A. Scarnegie

Kenneth Albert Scarnegie passed away peacefully on August 23, 2022, with sister Lisa Scarnegie-Milarch by his side.  Ken was preceded in death by his birth father, Albert Muzzin, mother Joan Scarnegie, and brother Gary.  He is survived by his father Phil, brother Jim, and sisters Andrea and Lisa.

Ken was born Kenneth Albert Muzzin on 4/2/1958 to Joan (Luteran) and Albert Muzzin.  He was their second child, after his brother Gary was born in 1955.  Their father Albert passed away only a couple years after Ken’s birth, and Joan then married Phil Scarnegie in 1961.  Phil adopted Gary and Ken, and then he went on to have 3 other children with Joan: Jim, Andrea, and Lisa.

Growing up, Ken was a bit of a troublemaker in school, but he had an engineering mindset.  He loved to take things apart just to see how they worked.  As a kid, he loved to tinker with electronics.  He built several homemade telephones, and even buried wiring down the block to his friend’s house so that they could have a private line to use as a walkie-talkie to stay up late goofing around without their parents knowing.

He went to St. Agatha Catholic School when the family lived in Redford, but graduated from Walled Lake Central after they moved to Union Lake.  At WLC, Ken excelled in Auto Mechanics and Electronics class at SWOVEC.  After graduation, he went on to get a 2-year degree at RETS electronics school.  With an entrepreneur spirit, he opened an electronics and tv repair shop.  After that fizzled, he moved on to other electronics-related positions with AC Spark Plug, General Motors, and Detroit Elevator Company to name a few.

In 1989, Ken decided that his true passion was dogs, so he founded the North American Dog Racing Association, and started the Classic K-9 Dog Show (https://classick9.com/).  He has traveled around the U.S. with the Classic K-9s for over 30 years, performing fun events that showcased a dog’s physical abilities, including obstacle races and high jump competitions.  They performed at various venues including pregame shows at sporting events, state and local fairs, pet expos, and other family-oriented events.  He even managed to get some air time on shows like GMA, Fox’s Pet Department, ESPN Incredible Dog Challenge, and America’s Talking.  The one he liked to brag about the most was the time he got on the Late Show with David Letterman in the “Stupid Pet Tricks” segment.

After he hurt his back a few years ago, he wasn’t able to travel with the show as much, so he started a local “Good Dog” obedience class to teach pet owners the basics of training their dogs.

His good friend Beth was by his side over the past few years, helping schedule shows, and conduct some of the classes.  She also helped take care of him throughout his illness right up to the end.  We are grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some good times with him over the last couple months and days before he passed.

Ken was loved by many, and will be missed by all.
