Obituary for Karen Ann Markey

Karen Ann Markey, a long time resident of Westland, died on February 21, 2019 at the age of 70.

Born May 14, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, Karen was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Vinic. As a young girl, Karen became ill with Polio and eventually overcame the disease. She was raised in Detroit and was a graduate of Cass Tech High School. Karen spent her career in accounts receivable at many companies in the Westland community. She was a long time active member of Grace Moravian Church.

Karen’s best work was as a mother—she was a strong, single care provider to her daughter and son. Karen had incredible faith in the challenging times and sacrificed whenever necessary to provide for her family. She was known to go out of her way to care for people. In struggles with her own health, Karen persevered with the help of her faith and love in Jesus. Karen believed that she was proof that He carried her through.

Karen loved singing God’s praises—she shared her talents as a member of the church choir and sang “Jesus loves me” to each and every one of her grandchildren. She enjoyed peaceful hobbies like reading and her crafts. She loved God’s creations in the beauty of nature, especially Lily of the Valley, red cardinals and butterflies.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Brian) Vaught, and her son, Ken (Lillian) Markey; grandchildren, Caitlyn, Alex, Lauren, and Emily Vaught; Danny, Aaron, Nathan, and Jeremy Stiltner, Devin Markey, Cody Shelldrake, Jordan Markey; great grandchildren, Emily and J.J. Stiltner, Anthony Jacobs, Danny Stiltner, Chase Shelldrake, and Everly Pitzer; brothers, Joe and Gary Vinic, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob Vinic.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, on Tuesday, February 26, at 11AM with Pastor Galen Grulke officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday, February 25, from 3-8PM and on Tuesday from 10AM until the time of service. Memorials may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
