Obituary for Joyce Karleen Mellin

Joyce Karleen Mellin, a longtime resident of Brighton, Michigan, died September 7, 2022 at the age of 88. Born August 25, 1934 in Darlington, Maryland to Elbert Joines and Mildred (Patrick) Joines. She was the eldest of seven children and graduated from Bel Air High School in Maryland. Joyce attended the Lutheran School of Nursing in W. Baltimore, Maryland where she met the love of her life, Grover Mellin Jr. at a Valentines Day dance.

Grover and Joyce were married on October 1, 1955 in Maryland. Residing in Ferndale, Michigan, Joyce worked as an E.R. nurse an Grover worked at Detroit Diesel. In the 70’s they moved to Lake of the Pines in Brighton to raise their two children, Keith and Carol. Taking time off from nursing to raise her children, Joyce took some refresher courses for two years to receive her B.S. degree in Nursing at Siena Heights University in 1986.

Joyce was an avid quilter and a member of the Heritage Quilters Club of Brighton and the Joyful Piecemakers Quilt group at her church. She enjoyed traveling with her siblings to Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head in South Carolina. She collected doll beds and dolls, and began researching genealogy records to find out about her family history.

Joyce was a longtime member of the West Highland Baptist Church in Milford, where she was involved in Women’s Ministries, and was the Regional Chairlady of Stonecroft Ministries for several years. She was a faithful servant to the Lord and enjoyed Bible studies at her home and other members homes.

While residing at the Independence Village of Brighton for the past three years, Joyce enjoyed all the activities offered. Exercise classes, crafts, Bible studies, music programs, and meeting new friends. We appreciate the good care that was given to her by all the staff. She was loved by everyone there and will be truly missed.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband Grover, her parents, two brothers Harold (Edith) Joines and David (Myrtle) Joines. Three sisters, Shirley Joines, Julia (Billie) Brown, and Virginia “Jenny” (James) Leonard, and a niece Beverly Brown May.

Joyce is survived by her son, Keith (Teresa Leverett) Mellin and daughter Carol Mellin of Brighton. Grandchildren Andria and Robert Mellin, and great grandchildren, Haylee Sawman and Jacob Mellin. A sister, Shelva (Rev. Ronald) Calhoun, and two sister-en-laws, Edith and Myrtle Joines. Many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A memorial service to be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at the West Highland Baptist Church in Milford, Michigan. Friends may gather at 10:00 am and service is at 11:00am.

Interment to follow at a later date to the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Highland Baptist Church Youth Mission Program, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
