Obituary for Joseph L. Kalwinski

Joseph L. Kalwinski, a resident of Brighton, and former resident of Mount Dora, Florida, died on December 31, 2017 at the age of 84.

He is survived by his sisters, Betty Bolda, Manya (George) Gerber, and Helen (John) Kelley; nieces and nephews, Susan (Chris) Marshall, Bob (Linda) Bolda, Beth (Tom) McMahon, Carl Bolda, David (Ruth) Gerber, Lisa Plancke, Mary Jo (Dan) Hickey, Joel, Sarah, and Paul Kelley; great nieces and nephews, Dianne (Matthew) Rostollan, Lisa Marshall, Alex, Kara, and Tasha Bolda, Ryan (Anna) McMahon, Alison McMahon, Sarah Bolda, Lindsay Gerber, Caroline and Frances Plancke, Paul, Emma, and Ben Hickey, John and Anna Kelley; great great nieces and nephews, Cidney, Zachary, Max, and Sam.

Following graduation from St. Mary’s of Redford High School Joe served with the U.S. Army in Munich, Germany. Following his time in the service he studied at Michigan State University through the GI Bill, and later University of Detroit where he earned his Master’s Degree in Art. He went on to teach english in high schools in Detroit, Chicago, California, Hawaii, New York and at St. Mary’s of Redford.

Joe enjoyed traveling throughout the world and when at home he enjoyed his family and his dogs. His humor, and intelligent, playful nature, endeared him to his large family of nieces and nephews and he loved them deeply. Wherever he lived, or wherever he traveled, he lived by his faith, and never hesitated to give of himself to help others. He was a great man and he will be dearly missed.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 32340 Pierce St., Beverly Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, January 6, at 12:30PM. Friends and family may gather at the church from 11:30AM until the time of Mass. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorials may be made in his name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Michigan Humane Society.
