Obituary for Joseph Earl Merritt

Joseph Earl Merritt passed away peacefully on May 12, 2021 at the age of 84.
He is preceded in death by his father Jim, his mother Marie, sister Margaret, and brother George.

Joe proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. After serving, he enrolled at Michigan State University and received a Bachelor's degree. He continued his education and earned a Master's degree in Human Resources  at the University of Detroit. Joe had a successful 35 year career with Ford Motor Company in Human Resources. After retirement he landed his favorite job, a golf course ranger at Crooked Tree/Boyne golf courses in Northern Michigan. Joe and his wife of 60 years, Cathie, spent their summers at their dream home on Walloon Lake golfing, socializing and cruising the lake with a steady stream of family and friends through the house.

Joe is survived by his wife Catherine and six children: Steve (Clarita), Mary Beth, Michael (Sheri), Ken (Heidi), Anne (Sean), Kevin (Jennifer), his nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his brother Bob. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Parish 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton, MI 48116. Visitation begins at the church at 10:00am.

Joe loved volunteering and spent 17 years sharing his time at Botsford Beaumont Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Capuchin Soup Kitchen: or Christ Child House:
