Obituary for Joseph Barry Blake

Joseph Barry Blake, 82, of Brighton, Michigan passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022.

Joe was born on January 1,1940 in Ashtabula, Ohio to the late Joseph and Mildred Blake. Growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, he attended Cathedral Prep High School as part of the Class of 1957. Joe graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1961. He then attended Holy Cross Seminary for four years. He remained an avid fan of the Fighting Irish throughout his lifetime, often visiting the South Bend campus for football games and reunions. It brought him great joy to see two of his children graduate from Notre Dame.

After receiving his undergrad in sociology, he would later continue his education, receiving a Master in Social Work from Wayne State University. He proudly served in the Marine Reserves as a young man.

While in Detroit working for Catholic Social Services, he met his future bride, Beverly Grace and the two would marry on April 26, 1969. Dedicated to the field of social work for many years, he spent over 25 years in Administration with Northville Public Schools. Upon his retirement, he continued to work at the Michigan Educational Credit Union as a marketing liaison and served on their Board of Directors.

Everyone that met him, loved him. He was a man of few words -- but when he spoke, people listened. He was patient and kind, thoughtful and generous.

In his free time, Joe loved golfing, playing courses throughout Metro-Detroit and Michigan. He even lived his dream playing several courses in Ireland. During his career he served as golf coach at both Livonia Ladywood High School and Northville High School. He coached his three daughters throughout their youth in basketball and golf, always lending a supportive hand and advice.

In July, he was honored to attend and be part of his 65th high school class reunion in Erie, PA.

Joe will be greatly missed by all who crossed his path.

Beloved husband of Beverly for 53 years. Loving father of Maureen Gill (Mike), Meghan Payne (Craig), and Mary Sneath (Al). Proud grandfather of Grace Payne, Michael Gill, Matthew Gill, Maura Sneath, Evelyn Payne, Molly Sneath, and Kevin Gill. Dear brother of the late Mary Louise Stec (Tom) and the late Kathryn Weible (the late Bill).

Visitation will be Friday, August 26th at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home (600 E. Main St. Brighton, MI 48116) from 2 - 8 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Catholic Church (711 Rickett Road Brighton, MI 48116) on Saturday, August 27th at 10:30AM.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Joe’s memory.
