Gwen Carol Maes, a resident of Hartland, passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the age of 75.
Gwen was born on August 4, 1944 in Detroit, daughter of the late Anthony and Wanda Sarna. She grew up in the Detroit metro area and worked at Detroit Diesel where she met her loving husband Larry whom she married in 1967. The newlyweds lived in Farmington Hills in the home they designed and built themselves until they moved to Hartland in their second home they designed and built themselves. While in Hartland Gwen went to work at the University of Michigan where she worked in the Institute of Social Research, Office of Financial Aid, and Political Science where she retired as Assistant to the Chair. She published a video documentary of social research while at the Institute of Social Research.
In her younger days Gwen was an excellent seamstress, making all her own clothes and winning many awards. Gwen and Larry loved to travel, always seeking out new and exciting opportunities.
She was extremely fond of nature and cherished working in her many gardens while tending her beloved flowers. Her caring nature extended to family and friends alike.
She was a woman of strong faith who loved life and who felt the presence of God in everyone and everything. She was active in numerous church committees. Gwen’s strong faith guided her throughout her life and comforted her in her final days.
Gwen is survived by Larry, her beloved husband and soulmate of fifty-two years. She is also survived by her dear brother, Robert (Ann) Sarna, brother-in-law, Kenneth (Ann) Maes, sister-in-law, Carolyn (the late Daniel) Arlen, nephews, Aaron Sarna, Alex Halron, Jeffrey Maes, nieces, René (Andy) Hilliard and Rhonda Halron.
Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main Street, Brighton, on Sunday, January 26, from 12 Noon until 8 PM will a Vigil Service at 7PM. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 2201 S. Old US Highway 23, Brighton, on Monday, January 27, at 11 AM. Friends may gather at the church from 10 AM until the time of Mass. Cremation will follow with interment in the Shrine of the Cross at the church. Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or to the church for Masses to be prayed in her name.
