Obituary for Gerard Rod Garcia

Gerard Garcia, of Hartland, died at his home there on Christmas Eve morning, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old. Born on February 21, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Frank and Mary Garcia. He attended White Hall Academy in Brooklyn and was a young college student in New York when met a young nursing student from Detroit, Louise Mason. He and his brother Frank often double dated with Louise and other nurses, and when she returned to Detroit, Gerard followed. He graduated from University of Detroit and had a fellowship to the University of Maryland for post graduate school. On June 19, 1954, he married Louise M. Mason at Dun Scotus Chapel in Southfield.

Mr. Garcia taught school in the Detroit area from 1954 into the late sixties, at St. Ann�s Detroit and St. Michael�s in Southfield, and Lincoln Junior High School in Ferndale, where he also coached football, baseball and basketball, while at the same time working with his wife�s family selling cars � a job which eventually evolved into his life�s work. He owned and operated in the family business of Hodges Imported Cars, (Hodges Subaru) and was a 40 plus year member of the Michigan Auto Dealers Association.
A devout Catholic, and a man of deep faith, he was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Church in Hartland where he served on the parish council. He was formerly a member of St. Scholastica Parish, Detroit. He was volunteer parole officer with Oakland County. A genial, generous, large hearted man who enjoyed golf, playing poker, euchre, and pinochle, at which he seldom lost, and wintering in Punta Gorda in recent years, more than anything he loved his large and growing family, and enjoyed shopping with his grandchildren for birthdays and holidays and special occasions. He felt a special obligation to be an attentive grandparent, especially since his dear wife died in late September, 2001. He is survived by his sons and daughters, Kathy (Phil) Mendiola, Pat (Michael) Starr, Nancy (Richard) Drew, John Garcia, Bill (Stephanie) Garcia and Anne (Andy) Perry. Also 11 grandchildren, Matua Mendiola, T.J. Mendiola, Kina Mendiola, Chris Garcia, Gerry Mendiola, David Mendiola, Ian Drew, Kelsey Drew, Michael Garcia, Nina Mendiola, and Nichole Garcia.
Also by his sisters, Gloria Garcia, Barbara Sigda, sisters-in-law, Fran Garcia, Claire (Tom) Bahen, and June Mason and brother in law, Neal (Jan) Mason, his dear companion, Nancy Sutherland many nieces, nephews and friends who join with his family in mourning the death of a good man and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 600 E. Main St., Brighton, Sunday from 2-9. Rosary Vigil service at 7PM. Funeral Mass on Monday at 10:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (Hacker Rd & M-59) Hartland, Fr. Francis George officiating. Cremation will follow. Memorials to Arbor Hospice or American Cancer Society appreciated.
