Obituary for Gerald "Jerry" Joseph Riley

Gerald “Jerry” Joseph Riley of Howell, died at Ascension Providence Hospital of Novi on Monday, August 9, 2021, in the care of his wife Eileen, daughters Erin & Heather, and son, John. He was 80 years old.

Born on June 22, 1941, in southwest Detroit, Jerry was the son of Louis and Alice (Condon) Riley. An Irish Catholic, he grew up in Detroit and attended Holy Redeemer High School. Jerry graduated in 1959.

Upon completing high school, Jerry joined the U.S. Navy and served during the turbulent Bay of Pigs Era until he was honorably discharged in 1963. That year, Jerry met Eileen on the Baker bus on the way to the Michigan Bell Building in downtown Detroit, where they both worked. Jerry grew very close to his future mother and father-in-law.

By January, 1970 they engaged. The couple were married in Detroit at Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church in September of that year.

The newlyweds lived on Whittaker Street in Detroit. Jerry’s family fondly remember trips up- north, where Jerry’s waterskiing always stole the show. Eventually, they moved to Livonia and then to Highland, where they lived happily for 38 years as they raised their three children. During this time, Jerry continued to work on communication technologies, winning Ameritech’s “I HAVE AN IDEA” award in 1990.

At 40 years old, Jerry took up running. Soon after, he began competing in marathons, running 26 in his lifetime. Jerry’s best time was three hours and thirty-six minutes, a phenomenal feat. Jerry continued to run, as well as mountain bike, well into his 70s.

After a successful career, Jerry retired in 2002. A devoted “Papa” to five grandchildren; Gráinne, Fiona, Ciarán, Declan, and Seámus; he is loved and remembered for his pancake art and iconic jokes.

Not only was Jerry dedicated to caring for his own siblings—Bob, Louis, Donna, & Rich— but also for his brothers and sisters-in-law—Christina, Nora, & deceased William, Charlie, Brian, & Mary Catherine. For this reason, Eileen’s family considers him an older brother of their own. Jerry’s selfless commitment to his family has left an enduring mark on the hearts of those who love him.

Son of the late Louis and Alice Riley, Jerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eileen M. Riley; children, Erin (Conor Caughey) Riley, Heather (Frank) Edrozo, and John (Angela) Riley; grandchildren, Gráinne, Fiona, and Ciaran Caughey, Declan, and Seamus Faron, Danielle, Samantha, Veronica, and Piper Boyer; siblings, Robert (Barbara) Riley, Marie (Michael) Meath, and Louis (Lynne) Riley; sister-in-laws, Christina Hesburn, and Nora Thomas; also many niece’s, nephew’s, extended family and dear friends.

Jerry is also preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Condon, and Richard Riley.
