Obituary for Fred Wolter

Frederick Charles Wolter, age 91, passed away quietly on November 17, 2016 in his home in Brighton, Michigan with his wife Jean Elain Wolter at his side. Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Fred was the eldest son of Fred and Ione Wolter.

Fred grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan and attended Ypsilanti High School. Fred loved sports and was a member of the football, basketball, swimming and track teams, earning four Varsity letters, Fred earned many awards in track including State Championship medal in the low hurdles.

After high school graduation Fred enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged as an Aviation Ordinanceman, Second Class at the end of World War II.

In 1947, Fred was hired at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. He worked various jobs at Ford, starting out as a test track driver and finally retiring as an engineer in the Research and Engineering Center. He also worked at Car Kraft and helped build the engine for the Ford Gas Turbine experimental transporter truck which was nicknamed “Big Red”.

Fred and Jean were married in 1948 in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

After retirement, Fred and Jean became “snowbirds” and spent their winters in Florida. Fred continued to enjoy his lifelong hobbies of boating and golfing, including becoming Commodore of the Old Bridge Yacht Club.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred O. Wolter, Ione C. (Thayer) Wolter, a brother, James (Moose) Wolter. He is survived by Jean Elain (Mast) Wolter, his beloved wife of 68 years, their children Linda (Jack) Freeman, Gary (Carolyn Webster) Wolter, Nancy (Joseph) Kooperman, their grandchildren Sarah, Jennifer, Katie, Claire and Keith, his sister Frances Brockman as well as many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held privately.
