Florence Lillie (Anderson) Hammar passed away on December 24, 2015 at 88 years old in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She passed in the presence of her family.

She was born in Escanaba, Michigan on November 13, 1927 to Carl and Lillian (Gleisner) Anderson. Florence is preceded in death by her mother, father and two siblings, Edward and Gerald. From a young age, she was an accomplished accompanist, pianist and vocalist, singing in the church and school choirs. She was sought after to perform at weddings and was the lead in school plays.

Upon graduating at the top of her class from Escanaba High School, Florence received a scholarship to Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and graduated in 1949. While at Lawrence, she sang in the Lawrence College Choir and performed at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. She went on to teach music at a public school in Ladue, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis.

Florence married the love of her life, Rev. Eric Hammar, on December 27, 1951. Florence finished the school year in St. Louis before moving back to the Upper Peninsula. She then taught school in Stephenson, Michigan, where Eric was a pastor at the Methodist church.

Florence spent her time raising her four children, and giving piano and voice lessons to hundreds of children. She was the director of the choir and handbell ensemble at various churches where Rev. Eric was the minister. She welcomed many pets into their home throughout the years including dogs, cats, rabbits, pigeons, and snakes.

In retirement, she and Eric enjoyed their summers at their cabin on the Escanaba River in the Upper Peninsula and spending time with their family. Additionally, they traveled to the Holy Lands and explored Europe, Scandanavia and Egypt.
