Obituary for Elsie L. Master

Elsie L. Master, a resident of Brighton, died surrounded by her family on Monday, January 11, 2016 at the age of 83.

Elsie was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 11, 1932, the daughter of Elizabeth Clara (nee Csizmansky) and Monte Norman Hale. She spent the majority of her life in the Detroit area and her family was part of a large Hungarian community within the city.

Elsie graduated from Northwestern High School where she excelled in modern dance and was president of the Dance Club. She was also involved in Mount Vernon House and student council. When Elsie was a youngster she enjoyed spending her summers at the family farm in the Village of Pentwater and on the shores of Lake Michigan.

After high school she took a secretarial position working in the Penobscot Building in Detroit. She met the love of her life, Charles (Chuck) Master, Jr., and they were married on October 24, 1953 at the Hungarian Church in Detroit. Elsie loved her family and spent her days taking care of Chuck and their three children. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and taking many trips with friends and family.

They raised their family in Detroit where she served as secretary at Lutheran Church of the Atonement. She also loved to serve others in her community and was president of the Rosedale Park Women’s Club and was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Chuck retired from the Detroit Fire Department and they moved to the Brighton area. She was married to her beloved husband for over 55 years. In her later years, Elsie spent time in faithful service at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church attending bible studies and participating in altar guild.

In a lifetime filled with service to others and to her community, at the center of it all were her faith and her family.

Elsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over fifty-five years, Charles Master, Jr., in 2009. She is survived by her loving daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Thomas and Laura Master; her loving son, Steven (Stephanie) Master; grandchildren, Christopher Thomas and Shannon (Tyler) La Fountain, Joshua (Angela Gruska) and Scott (fiancé Brianna Van Mensel) Keegan, Madeline and Samuel Master; and great grandson, Easton LaFountain.
