Eleanor Pauline Bendy (Fazekas) passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's, at Waltonwood - Twelve Oaks Memory Care on Sunday, January 12, 2020. She was 92 years old.
Born on September 15, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio, her family moved to Michigan when she was a young girl. Through their family’s’ Hungarian friends, she met Koloman Bendy and they married on April 25th, 1953 at Holy Cross Church in Detroit. They enjoyed 56 years together before Koloman passed away in 2009. Eleanor worked as a secretary at Comerica (formerly Detroit Bank and Trust). Both were actively involved at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Dearborn where she participated in the choir and eventually became the matriarch of the choir. She also brought Communion to the elderly and those who were home-bound, planted flowers at the church in the spring and cooked for anyone who may have been in need of a meal.
Eleanor was affectionately called “Big Mama” by her two son-in-laws due to her vivacious, take-charge nature, but was also recognized for her selfless acts of kindness to helping others in need.
She loved to shop for her children and grandchildren boasting about the bargains she came across. And of course, no one can ever forget the delicious, home-cooked Hungarian dishes she made.
Eleanor and Koloman had many Hungarian friends, known as the “Hungarian Connection”. With Eleanor’s passing the Hungarian Connection is now complete. Eleanor will be missed, but her memory will live on in all whose life she touched.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (David) Barette and Terri (Stephen) Didyk; grandchildren, Melissa Barette, Nicholas and Christopher Didyk; brothers, Frank (the late Janet) Fazekas and Jerry Fazekas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Koloman Bendy and her siblings, Gabriel and Margaret.
Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main Street, Brighton on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 from 3—8 PM, with a vigil service at 7 PM.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2201 S. Old 23 Hwy, Brighton on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at 11 AM, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. A luncheon will follow. Entombment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.
