Obituary for Elaine Matise Lutz

Elaine Matise Lutz, a resident of Brighton, Michigan and native of Independence, Louisiana, died on September 22, 2017 after having been diagnosed with cancer three years ago. She was 74 years old.

She is survived by Charles “Chuck”, her beloved husband of over fifty years; her daughter, Kristen D. (Jeff) Henry; her son, Charles “Chip” M. (Heather) Lutz; grandchildren, Nicholas “Nick” Henry, Grace “Gracie” Henry, Olivia “Livie” Henry, Carson and Ashlyn Lutz.

Born June 26, 1943 in Independence, Louisiana, Elaine was the only child born to parents Fannie G. and Christopher D. Matise.

Elaine attended Mater Dolorosa School and graduated from Independence High School. She continued her education at Southeastern Louisiana University where she earned her degree in social work.

Following her education, Elaine worked at the Hammond State School in Louisiana and then at Homestead Hospital in Pittsburgh after her marriage. Eventually, after moving to Michigan, she would come to work in Brighton at Orin Jewelers and then later as a Treatment Coordinator with Dr. Niles’ Orthodontics practice.

Elaine met the young Charles Lutz on a blind date when she accompanied her girlfriend in travels to Fort Polk in Louisiana. From the time that they met, their love blossomed - Chuck would take weekend leave to visit with Elaine. On November 19, 1966, the two were wed and began their lives together. In due time, the couple was blessed by the births of their daughter, Kristen, and then, son, Charles ‘Chip.’ Elaine and Chuck also made room in their lives for her mother, Fannie, who was well-cared for in their home for nearly two decades.

Elaine was most proud of her work and accomplishments as a devoted wife, dedicated daughter and loving mother.  She especially loved being a grandmother. Elaine spoiled her grandchildren with attention and thoughtful gifts. She was an avid QVC shopper and always found the most unique gift from "Grandma Lutz".  She was most generous with her time and could always be counted on for childcare, sleepovers and attendance at all of the grand kids' activities or sporting events. In later years, Chuck and Elaine organized a special annual, week-long vacation for the family at Twin Lakes where trips were made to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, as well as to Michigan Adventure Amusement Park.

When Elaine wasn’t tending to her home and family, she could be found in her elaborate flower gardens. She was fond of adding and maintaining flower beds, as well as feeding the birds - especially her hummingbirds. Elaine enjoyed participating in book clubs with her neighborhood friends.  In her younger years, Elaine was active with the Brighton Jaycets and was involved with the Mother's Club at St. Patrick's School in Brighton when the children were young.  She could always be counted on to lend a hand.

She will be deeply missed by all of those blessed by her presence in their lives.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, on Tuesday, September 26, from 3-8PM with a Rosary at 7PM.
Mass of the Resurrection from St. Patrick Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton, on Wednesday, September 27, at 10AM. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be made in her name to St. Patrick Catholic Church. For further information please call 810-229-2905.
