Obituary for Edwin J. Mikowski

Edwin J. Mikowski of Brighton died Monday, January 18, 2010 in the care of his family. He was 89 years old.
Born September 24, 1920 in Cedar, Michigan, Edwin was the 3rd youngest of 15 children born to parents William and Polly Mikowski. Edwin and his brothers and sisters were raised on the family farm. After his schooling, Edwin joined the work of his family�s farm. Between Cedar and Maple, Michigan, Edwin met the love of his life, Elizabeth C. �Betty� Novak. Their love grew and on June 30, 1945, the couple was married. Edwin and Betty were blessed by the births of their 6 children. Edwin worked hard to care for his family; he spent his long career in masonry and brickwork with the Roger Bell Construction Company.
Edwin showed a special devotion to the recitation of the Holy Rosary and was deeply committed to his faith. He was an active member at St. Patrick Catholic Church where he often led the rosary with his characteristically strong voice.
Edwin took great joy in owning his race horses and was always proud on race day. He was an avid card player and always enjoyed a trip to the casino where he focused on the slot machines.
Edwin was a dedicated husband, devoted father, and loving Papa. He preceded in death by his son Jerry Edwin Mikowski (d. 2006). Edwin is survived by Elizabeth �Betty� Mikowski, his beloved wife of over 64 years; loving children Linda (Thomas Fulton) Hughes, Tommy (Agnes) Mikowski, Nancy (Charlie) Spears, Diane (Martin) Halloran, Timothy Mikowski; grandchildren Elijah Mikowski, Robert (Beth) LaVanture, Billy LaVanture, Laura (Richard) Fairchild, Tina Mikowski, Tommy (fianc�e Megan) Mikowski, Jr., Suzy Mikowski, Mark Spears, Eddie (Courtney) Spears, Andrea Major, Angie (fianc� Aaron) Mikowski; 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild on the way; and sister Bernice Winowicki. Also survived by many loving extended family members and a host of dear friends who join with the family in mourning his death and giving thanks to God for his life among them.

Funeral Liturgy from St. Patrick�s Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton, Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Fr. Karl Pung to officiate. Burial Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday 3-9 PM at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 600 East Main Street, Brighton. Rosary Wednesday evening. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
