Obituary for Edward Scott Claflin, III.

Edward Scott Claflin, Ph.D., died of ALS (Lou Gehrig�s disease) at home on Saturday, April 3. He was brother to Tom Claflin (Chris) and Art Claflin (Gretchen) and beloved uncle of Liz (John Wyderko), Ted, Austin Lampros, Ann (Brian Kelly), Rachel, and Emily. He was great uncle to Zachary Wyderko.

Born to Edward Scott and Mona Claflin on August 15, 1943, in New Haven, Connecticut, Scott was raised in Bowling Green, Ohio, where he made many lasting friendships. After graduating from Oberlin College, he earned a Master of Science degree in physics from the University of Nevada at Reno, and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from University of California at Riverside. Scott lived most of his life in Redwood City, California, but moved to Brighton to spend the last years of his life with family.

Scott spent his professional career increasing scientific knowledge through projects involving space missions and satellite research. He was a senior engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which is the leading U.S. center for exploration of the solar system with major programs in space-based earth sciences. He continued his career as a research scientist in space physics at the Lockheed Martin Corporation. Scott�s articles appeared in numerous scientific publications.

A private memorial is planned. Donations in Scott�s memory may be made to the Brighton District Library, 100 Library Drive, Brighton, Michigan 48116, or to ALS of Michigan.
