Dr. Robert D. Meek, of Hartland, Michigan, a loving father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 4, 2018 at the age of 90.
Robert graduated from Cooley High School in the class of 1946 and the Chicago College of Optometry in the class of 1952. After college, Robert faithfully served his country as an officer and flight crew member in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and flew on more than 125 missions in Korea and Okinawa (Naha AFB). He received numerous decorations and medals from the U.S. Air Force and the ROK Army. Following his active duty wartime service he and his wife Joyce raised their family in Plymouth and Hartland, Michigan, where Robert operated his optometry practice for over thirty years and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club.
In Plymouth he served as a local PTA President, was on the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, and had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. They later moved to Hartland, Michigan, where they were active members of the community and members of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his grandchildren, as well as gardening, breeding and racing standardbred horses, and flying private aircraft. After having retired to Florida and Kentucky, they returned to Hartland, Michigan in 2010. He lost his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Joyce on September 19, 2017.
He is survived by his children, Jeffery (Barb) Meek, Karen (Rick) Essenburg, Randy (Tammy) Meek, Diane Russell, Judy (Wade) Haddad; grandchildren, Sonnet, Jennifer, Heidi, Jeffrey R., Jonathan J., Katie, David, Patricia, Ryan, Daniel, Christopher, Nathan, Autumn, Joseph, and Adeline; great grandchildren, Teddy, Jonathan Liam, Avery, Ansley, and Finley; sister-in-law, Kathy (Tom) Crowel; brother-in-law, Dave (the late Virginia) Pixley; nieces and nephews.
A Memorial and Committal Service will take place at Hodge Cemetery in Hartland on Saturday, August 18th 2018 at 11am. Rev. Dr. Frank J. Pies to officiate. A luncheon will follow immediately at Bakers of Milford Restaurant, 2025 S. Milford Rd, Milford.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
