DUE TO THE COVID-19 VIRUS, THE MEMORIAL SERVICE SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2020 HAS BEEN CANCELED.
Doris Ione Sloan(nee Smith) died at Suncrest Senior Living, Milford, Michigan on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 in the presence and care of a talented and loving group of care-givers, and son, Fred, and daughter-in-law, Suzanne. Doris was 95 years and 6 months old. While she could be cranky at times, it was evident that the Staff patiently loved her as one of their own, a love that was fully returned by Doris.
Doris met Clayton Terrell in 1942 when he was home from Belton, Texas for one of two funerals held for his brother, Leon, who had been killed in action in New Guinea. Their relationship continued to blossom even after Clayton had returned to Texas for military duty. It was not too long before Doris and Clayton realized that a long-distance relationship was not going to work for them. Clayton was preparing to ship out to Europe, so nineteen year old Doris packed up and headed for Belton. They were married on January 14, 1943. Not long after, Clayton shipped out with the 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, and Doris went back to Stanton, Michigan.
On May 28, 1944, their first son, David, was born. Clayton returned safely home at the end of WWII, and second son, Fred, was born September 25, 1946. Clayton and family moved to Greenville, Michigan for employment. As the boys grew, the family loved camping, hunting, fishing, boating and water skiing. Doris remained a homemaker, living in the same house until 1967, when Doris and Clayton were divorced. In time, each was remarried.
In 1980 Doris and her new husband, Jim Sloan, moved to Florida loving the warm weather until Jim died in 2008. Fred and Suzanne moved Doris back to Michigan where she lived in different locations until she found her earthly forever-home and lived at Suncrest(previously known as Riverside) for six years before going home to be with her savior. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son, Fredrick (Suzanne) Terrell; step-daughters, Kim Moenning and Kathy (Aaron) Miller; grandchildren, Melissa Reid, Miranda (Jason) Byrd, Jennifer Miner, Janet (Richard) Bard and James Terrell; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Austin, Brecken, Averil, Blaine, Bryce, Bella, Tiffany, Debra, Paige and Damon as well as many close friends and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sloan (d. 2008); son, David Terrell (d. 2018) and step son-in-law, Dennis Moenning (d. 2015).
