Obituary for Diana MaryEllen Hamlett

Diana MaryEllen DePratti Hamlett, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Brighton, MI, on May 28, 2022 with her children by her side after a day of in-person and virtual visits from all her children, grandchildren and their spouses.

Diana was born on June 13, 1926, in Flint, MI, and was the daughter of John DePratti and Anita Girardi DePratti, both deceased. She spent her youth in Athol, MA, where she went to high school and first met her husband Bruce. They started dating after he returned from his service with the Marines in World War II. Diana graduated from Westbrook Junior College and attended an additional year at Boston University before working as an executive secretary in Boston. She and Bruce were married in Athol and moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where they lived for two years until Bruce’s graduation from Brown University.

Diana was a devoted wife who was married for nearly 71 years, a loving mother of five children, and a wonderful homemaker through several moves that took the family to Pittsburgh, PA, Murray Hill, NJ, and Farmington Hills, MI. When Bruce retired from his business, they moved to Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter, FL, where they lived until their return to Michigan (Brighton) in 2014.

Diana was an early volunteer for the Headstart Program, and could always be counted on to do her part as an officer of the various organizations she joined in the many places she lived. She was a consummate home cook who collected recipes well into her 80s, an avid golfer with two holes-in one and numerous trophies to her credit, and she served as president of two women’s golf associations where she was a member. She was also an excellent bowler, tennis player and dancer. However, what she most enjoyed in later years were the lively get-togethers with her family, extended family, and close friends.

Diana was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Hamlett, daughter Lynne Hamlett, brother Daniel DePratti, brothers-in-law Fred Hamlett, Sherwood Pine, and Donald Denniston, and sisters-in-law Kay DePratti, Betty Denniston, and Hazel Hamlett. Diana will be greatly missed but her memory will live on with her daughters and their spouses, Jacqueline Capp (Bill) and Sharon Kuzma (Tim); her sons and their spouses, Kevin Hamlett (former wife Gayle) and Randy Hamlett (Sue); nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; brother Victor DePratti; sister-in-law Jean DePratti; and many other relatives and friends who also loved her.

The family plans to have a celebration-of-life gathering for Bruce and Diana together and will provide further information as arrangements are finalized with Lynch & Sons, Brighton, MI at 810-229-2905. Donations in Diana or Bruce Hamlett’s memory may be made to Heartland Hospice of Brighton, MI, or Dreamweaver Foundation.
