Obituary for Dennis G. Migdal

Dennis G. Migdal of Brighton died on November 17, 2019 at the age of 54.

The person

Dennis was a quiet and multifaceted individual. The classic phrase that best describes him would be the old adage “still waters run deep," as he was both a deep and reflective individual. Some personalities are driven towards athletic endeavors like football, soccer, and baseball, while others are drawn towards more intellectual pursuits like board games, reading, poetry. Dennis was driven towards the latter -- a mind constantly in process, and seeking deeper meaning from daily interactions. This is evidenced in his daily activities of things he did and enjoyed.

He found a certain love of working at BlackStone Stables horse farm -- interacting with the huge beasts, helping with the upkeep and cleaning activities, and ultimately learning what he could about the makeup of these grand animals. He took an interest in equine physiology, taking hand written notes that outline the anatomy with terms like “muzzle, coronet, underline, withers and fetlock.” There was also an understanding of gear, the “saddle, stirrups, and cinch.” His belief was that a physical world is nothing without an intimate understanding of how things are constructed, how things fit together. He embraced his job at the horse stable as a physical and intellectual education, and developed his deeper love of the creatures with which he worked.

As some find themselves in a world of words and patterns and creativity, there’s a desire to tie it all together in a meaningful way. Dennis found this in his love of poetry, both the words as written by classic authors as well as his own. One of his letters written to a friend begins as “A voyage I now partake, to give acceptance of your generous gift." It goes on to describe a simple lunch with beautiful flourish of phrase and attention to detail, and concludes with “The gift is sincere and welcome in these time of want. Hoping for a better tomorrow”. This sincere sentiment transcends us, reflecting the core of our desire for one another: Simple gifts and a better tomorrow.

Tai Chi

Dennis discovered the gentle art of Tai Chi in his later years as a relaxing and yet exhilarating exercise that anyone could do. It matched his deep reflective nature and finding balance and place in one’s existence: Gentle arts for gentle people.

Puzzles, Rubik’s cube, board games

The creative mind does not sit still and this was evidenced at a young age, with his analytical mind solving puzzles, doing word games and playing board games. He was adept at chess, a solver of Rubik’s Cube, and generally loved play that engaged his sense of order and fairness. This is not to say he was competitive -- to the contrary, his love was the actual engagement of others to see how they would play -- not to dominate or win. The gameplay itself was the gratification. He took his contentment in working with others, so the end result did not matter. It was the journey he enjoyed, not the destination, and thus the perfect metaphor for the way he saw life.

If a journey is begun, and takes a lifetime, one should enjoy the trip in and of itself. When you get to the end of the voyage, you can look back and know it was a good journey. Whether you win or lose is not the goal, it’s the enjoyment of the game that matters.

He is survived by his father, Michael; step-mother, Kim; brothers, Daniel and Donald(Lori). Dennis is preceded in death by his mother Betty in 1993.
