GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Deloris Cook, beloved wife of the late James McCallum Cook, and loving mother of six children and their spouses, passed away surrounded by her children on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at her home in Pinckney. Deloris, age 90, was born to Anthony and Virginia Velthoven on July 2, 1928 in Hamtramck.
Deloris and James married on November 19, 1949 at St. Florian’s Church in Hamtramck. Deloris was affectionately called “Darling Dee” by her husband of fifty-three years who passed in 2003. Together they raised six children; James (Pat) Cook of Dublin, OH, Carolyn (Greg) Waller of Roscommon, Steven Cook of Ypsilanti and Sandy of Troy, Mary (Viken) Matossian of Ann Arbor, Virginia (Randy) Piehler of Brighton, and Michael (Carol) Cook of Howell.
Family was Dee’s main focus in life. She was an organized homemaker who loved gardening, sewing, knitting and spreading love among her twenty-one grandchildren; Sarah, Andrea, Scott, Crystal, Jimmy (Morgan), Kelly (Holly), Jeffrey (Jessie), Anahid, Kathryn, Margarite, Caitlyn, Maria (Quinn), Rosemary, Garo, Isabelle, Meghan, Amanda, Julia, Sophia, Michael Jr. and Madelyn. Dee was also blessed with three great grandchildren; Gwendolyn, Jackson and Ella. She is survived by her siblings; Arthur (Lorrie) Velthoven of Highland, Virginia (Angelo) Iaconelli of Milford and Ron (Sue) Velthoven of Livonia. Dee had a special bond with her younger sister Virginia.
Dee was the matriarch of the Cook family who will be remembered for her motherly love and cute mannerisms. She loved to honor family traditions, whether it was celebrating holiday parties with festive decorations or just a small family gathering. She enjoyed meticulously dressing herself and family, especially for the holidays; complete with hats, gloves, fancy dresses and patent shoes with lacy anklets for the girls and bow ties for the boys. She had a love for musical bears and baby dolls (which she passed on to her daughters). Other memorable moments include happy hour with Mack at the pool, sewing doll outfits and knitting baby clothes. We will never forget Dee wearing color coordinated gloves, regardless of the season, her fussy food preferences and neatly folded Kleenexes.
At her granddaughter’s recent wedding, she waved like a queen as she was escorted down the aisle like the “Belle of the Ball”. Dee celebrated her 90th Birthday with many of her loved ones just two weeks prior to her passing and was vibrant to the end. We are positive that “Darling Dee” is dancing with her husband “Mack” forevermore in heaven.
