Obituary for Delores "Jane" Harris

Delores “Jane” Harris (nee Smith) O’Brien, a resident of Brighton and former resident of Livonia and Dearborn, died on August 11, 2018 at the age of 82.

Jane was born on January 30, 1936 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, one of eleven children born to Dewitt Tallmadge and Ethel (McCluggage) Smith. At a young age the family moved to Dearborn where she grew up and graduated from Dearborn High School. Jane worked as a cashier with Montgomery Wards, Burger Chef, an editor with Hurst Publishing in Southfield and deeply enjoyed her last job in the photo department at Walmart in New Hudson.

Jane was ever dedicated to her family. Loving wife, lunch lady, school librarian, hockey practices and games, and many dance lessons. She traveled with both Rick and Delores to parades and competitions throughout Michigan with their musical corp. She was known for her delicious potato salad, crotched special afghans and always had a knack for finding the perfect, unique gift for those in her life. She was very active in the Brighton and Hartland Senior Citizens and the South Lyon Eagles. She loved playing and working at Bingo, and loved her Detroit Tigers on TV. Much of her times were spent with her large family, Sunday at Grandmas. Family would go in and out and food was ready all day long. She was especially close with her sister Lil (Elizabeth). In fact it was Lil who gave her name Delores at birth. Jane was also close with Lil’s daughters Bev, Wanda and Suzanne of whom she enjoyed several road trips. Jane had many friends. She made and kept friends for many years of which she met through places she worked, lived and organizations she was involved with. She was always calling someone, she loved her phone. She cared deeply for her friends as they did for her. For the last two years of her life Jane lived at Wellbridge of Brighton. There she was extremely active and popular. The staff cared for her to the very end, the family is grateful she was very comfortable and happy there.

She is survived by her daughter, Delores O’Brien-Parham and her husband Sammy; her son, Rick O’Brien and his wife Janet; step-son, Randy Harris and his wife Connie; granddaughters, Gina Aguzzi, Natalie Aguzzi (Calvin Heckman III), Katie (Marshall) Hatcher, Meghan (Jason) McGrath, Aimee (James) Hemming, Ashlee O’Brien (Jaycob Delpiano); Dayna, Megan, Emily, Lindsey, Luke and their families; sister-in-law Pat Johnson and family, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Jane will also be forever remembered by numerous extended family and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Thomas O’Brien (1982); Jim Harris (1993); and Rick’s father Dave Thrapp (2018). Jane was the last living sibling of all of her brothers and sisters; Claude, Charlie Vean, Elizabeth, Nell, DT, Ralph, Jim, Jean, Ethel and Bethel. As well as her two cats Tiger and Lioness.

A celebration of life for Jane will be held at Delores’ home on September 8th, 2018 at 1pm.
