Obituary for David Keith Reinke

David Keith Reinke, 82, long-time resident of Livingston County, passed away Aug. 18, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dave was born in Lorain, OH, on Sept. 21, 1939, the youngest of four children to Harry & Mary Reinke. He is proceeded in death by his brothers Dale (survived by Joan) and Del (Jeanne) and is survived by his sister, “best friend & confidante,” Judy (Al) Louk, of Amherst, OH.

Above all, David was a family man: beloved husband of 60 years to Mary Ellen (Marcellus); devoted father to Steve (Julie), Brad, Kurt, and Gregg; and proud grandfather to Tyler, Austin, Dylan, Garrett, Sophia, Alyssa, Derick, Jake & Owen; and Uncle Dave to 8 nephews and 5 nieces.

Dave and Mary met and were married in 1962 while he was attending The Defiance College on a football scholarship. He also worked part-time as a sports photographer at the Defiance Crescent News. After graduating in 1963, David’s teaching and coaching career began at Paulding High School, then continued at Greenville High School. In 1966, Dave and Mary moved to Michigan, where he accepted a teaching position and where he spent 35 years in Special Education at W.J. Maxey Boys Training School, while earning a Master’s in Special Education at Eastern Michigan University.

David loved all kinds of sports as a participant, coach, referee, umpire, parent/grandparent and spectator. An outdoor enthusiast, David raised Irish Setters to compete in field trials, camped, fished, and generally enjoyed being outdoors whether golfing or mowing his lawn.  A well-respected volunteer coach, for many years, David taught the fundamentals of football and helped players develop confidence and learn life skills like teamwork and sportsmanship. As his sons grew older, Dave’s influence continued as a referee and umpire for youth sports. An avid golfer, Dave worked at Huron Meadows Golf Course for several years after retiring from teaching.

Dave and Mary enjoyed traveling and visiting their kids living throughout the U.S. and Europe. They visited all of North America except for 3 New England states, as well as 10 European countries. The last three New England states were slated for their 60th anniversary. Their 50th Anniversary was celebrated on European river cruise, their 40th anniversary in Hawaii, and they celebrated their retirement with a trip with friends to Australia and New Zealand.

For the last 20 years, Dave and Mary have wintered in Arizona, initially to be close to Dave’s family, then to make new friends with mutual interest in golf, playing cards, barbecuing, and exploring the desert. Always the competitor, Dave co-captained the Lost Dutchman Scorpion shuffleboard team to win the 2017 Arizona State Team Championship.

To his family and friends, Dave wrote, “I hope that I have left something positive with you in your hearts that helped in your lives.”

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 2, from 5 - 8 pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, MI 48116. Please post your memories and stories to David’s virtual memorial. The family “Celebration of Life” will be at Lakelands Golf & Country Club on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made in David's honor. Please visit the Memorial Contribution links at the bottom of the page for opportunities to donate in David's memory.
