David A. Skiven, a resident of Brighton, passed away at home Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in the care of his family. He was 64 years old.
David was born September 20, 1947 to Leslie and Lorraine (nee. Sommer) in Detroit, Michigan. A hard working man, David dedicated 42 years to his career at General Motors Corporation, serving as the executive director of GMs Worldwide Facilities group. He met the woman of his dreams, Karen, at GM and they were married April 12, 1969. The young couple moved to Plymouth where they raised their two boys, Kyle and Keith. David and his family eventually settled in Brighton where they lived for 14 years.
David was living the dream, as hed say and found great joy in his job. He was the Co-Director of the Engineering Society of Detroit Institute (ESDI) and served as the Vice President for four years. Throughout his career he achieved many awards and recognitions including being the first recipient of the General Motors Environmental and Energy wall of fame in 2008 and earning ESDs highest honor, the Horace H. Rackham Humanitarian Award in 2011.
Following his retirement in 2008, he found it difficult to leave the professional life completely and co-founded the The Engineering Society of Detroit Institute. He loved to spend his time traveling with his wife, golfing with his sons and painting landscapes. His hard work and dedication will be missed by many, but never forgotten.
He is survived by Karen, his beloved wife of 42 years; children, Keith (Lisa), Kyle (Quynh); sister, Carol (Bruce) Butske; nephew, Bill (Tuli) Butske with children, Ava sister-in-law, Cheryl (Jim) DeLange; father-in-law, Steve Godra. David also leaves a host of colleagues and friends at General Motors who join his family in mourning the loss of a great man.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main, Brighton, Saturday, November 19, at 3 PM. Pastor Frank Graves to officiate. Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8 PM and Saturday 10 AM until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are encouraged to the David A.
