Daisy Lou (Cooley) Pitkin died on the evening of October 2, 2010, peacefully in Hopkins, Minnesota from Alzheimers disease in the presence of family. She was born in Howell, Michigan on August 1, 1927 to a large family, then raised her own family in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Toledo, Ohio, Elyria Ohio, and Okemos, Michigan. Her happiness, warmth, and sunny disposition reflected her name, which means days eye after the flower which opens to the sun. She was a deeply loving, accepting, and generous person who greatly enjoyed travel, from road trips to world tours. Her connection to nature was evident in the wildlife observing, journaling, and walking which she did throughout her life. A strong sense of justice permeated her relationships, readings, and community organizing activity. Throughout her life, she was a talented singer and pianist who nurtured and appreciated musical skills in her family. She had great curiosity and a thirst for knowledge which lives on in her grandchildren. She enjoyed working as an educational aide and administrative assistant positions in healthcare and in student affairs at Michigan State University before retiring in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Pitkin, and daughter Loneita Ann Pitkin Atkinson, but is survived and celebrated by her daughters Kay and LuAnn Pitkin; son-in-law, Tak Tang; grandchildren, Aimee Atkinson, Estrella Atkinson, and Thomas Tang.
Burial of ashes will be scheduled at a later date. Donations to the Alzheimers Association and the Nature Conservancy are appreciated. For further information please call 810-229-2905.
