Obituary for Carl Peter Nelson

Carl Peter “Pete” Nelson, of Brighton passed away on December 14, 2018 at the age of 85.

Pete Nelson was born the third son to Gustave and Mabel Nelson, proud Swedish Americans from northern Wisconsin and Michigan. Known by his middle name, Pete grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan, and was a near life-long resident of the Downriver suburbs south of Detroit. Pete attended high school at Wyandotte’s Roosevelt High and college at Kalamazoo College, graduating with a BA in Economics. In his early married life, he and his first wife, Jean (Murdoch), lived in Riverview, then Trenton, then Grosse Ile, and finally back in Wyandotte once again. Jean died of cancer in 1989. A few years later, Pete met his future second wife, Pat, at a dinner party given by mutual friends. Pete and Pat were married on June 3, 1995.

A fierce sports fan and athlete, Pete participated in organized sports throughout his life, starting with baseball and basketball in his young days. In later years Pete played recreational baseball with a men’s league in Wyandotte and basketball on his church team. A member of West Shore Golf and Country Club on Grosse Ile since the 1950s, he spent his weekends and Wednesday afternoons perfecting his game. He also played tennis with Jean at Grosse Ile Tennis Center. He and Jean joined a travel club, the Nomads, in the 1970s, enjoying many trips to the Caribbean and Mexico flying on the club’s private plane.

Pete worked as a businessman all his life, starting with a sales position at Wyandotte’s Pennsalt Corporation. He soon moved on to management positions at Wyandotte Savings Bank, Alexander Proudfoot Management Consulting, National Bank of Wyandotte-Taylor, Novi Aluminum Casting, and the City of Rockwood. Additional training in accounting allowed him to assist his CPA brother-in-law Larry when he was swamped during tax season.

As a local businessman, Pete took an active interest in Downriver affairs, elected to a seat on Riverview’s School Board and joining the local Jaycees and Rotary Clubs. He belonged to Wyandotte’s St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church from childhood until he and his family joined Faith United Methodist in Trenton in 1966. In later years, he attended Wyandotte’s St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with his first wife Jean. After his second marriage, he and Pat moved to Brighton, where they belonged to First Presbyterian Church. No matter which congregation he belonged to, Pete sang along with the basses in the choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Milton and Gustin; sister Karen; and first wife, Jean.

Pete is survived by his second wife, Pat Nelson; son, Gustave Nelson (Debbie) of Farmington Hills and daughter, Nancy Nelson (Richard Hughes) of Ann Arbor; stepdaughter, Ruth Tatarunas (Bruno) and stepson, David Hamel (Bobbie); grandchildren, Tiffany Watts, Carrie Hocking, Ashley Tartaglia, Owen Hughes and Eric Hughes, Kas Tatarunas, David Hamel, Amy Wooten, Jason Hamel and Rebecca Hopkins; eleven great grandchildren and many dear extended family members and friends.
